Definately getting this!
NFO says released to cinemas in 2003, must be nice. In the States it doesn't come out until May 25th, and it's going straight to video. oh well

from sample
6/9/?

:: It was released in theatres here during December(i think) of 03. It only played on a few, small, screens. -K::

Talking Bubba Ho Temp and U.S. Release

This is a great movie especially if your a fan of the ultime Bruce Campbell (aka Ash from Evil Dead). This movie did play a SMALL number of theaters in spots across the U.S.

This was at the Toronto film festival last year and was pure brilliance. But, a film this "good" has problems getting releasing, thus the STV.

"The best zombie meets Elvis flick. Period."

Great to see this finally make it to a wider audience! Saw this last October at the Leeds International Film Festival in the UK, where it was completely sold out and was a huge hit with the audience. Have to admit, as much as I enjoyed it, it wasn't quite as fantastic as I'd hoped for - (I guess all the hype from a certain Aint-It-Cool website had elevated it to almost mythic proportions!) Having said that Bruce Campbell is quite superb as Elvis / Sebastian Haff and Ossie Davis as JFK is equally great.

As for this release, I got it last night, so my comments are based on the full release, NOT the sample. Picture quality is pretty decent, most of the film is quite dark, so you would be advised to turn the brightness up on your set a little (not too much, mind), but it holds up pretty well. There is the timecode that runs throughout in the top right corner of the screen as per the screenshot. Also 'Property Of MGM/UA' appears intermittently throughout the film. Neither is a major distraction, although it would be better without them, obviously! As for the comments from other users about the reds being too strong, well try turning the colour down perhaps???

Sound is fairly solid, nothing earth shattering, but it's clean and in synch.

Overall, a lot of people are gonna be very pleased to see this after a long wait.

Rating:

7/7.5/8

And as Elvis himself says..."Don't fuck with the King!"

It was playing at a theatre by my work about a month ago, and I live in southern California.

Bubba ho-tep....what else can you say
video 8
audio 8
movie 5 (only because it is not for everyone personally i give it a 10) definatly a cult film

heard about this movie last year but never played anywhere near where i live

Posted by humanaut on 03-11-2004 12:16 PM:

heh, this movie is excellent!! destined to be a cult classic.

I didn't notice any major redness on my set. The small timer in the top left corner is pretty easy to ignore, as is the intermittent 'property of mgm' that pops up occasionally (its a screener, so..)

Sound is decent.

Definitely get this screener if you like b-movie-horror/comedy/elvis/scarab beetles/mummies/JFK/nursing home flicks.

Hmmm, can't see how this movie got that high score at IMDB :P
The timer is pretty easy to ignore, but it's still annoying, a bad quality release, but I've seen worse :} Expects more from a DVDscr though...

The video and audio were very good..... damn near perfect. The movie was straight up RETARDED. It's been a long time since I've been so turned off by a movie. This movie was nothing short of ridiculous and ultra cheesy.

Video 9 / Audio 10 / Movie 2.5

Yes, this was a great movie, destined to be a cult classic, but no one has mentioned that it is directed by the director of the great Phantasm series of flicks.

Posted by KLashNekkOff on 03-28-2004 05:25 PM:

finally got round to watching this one, and to be honest i was kinda dissapointed

video - very nice, clear, good colours. There is a timer in the top right hand corner which is in the way, but not that much. Little pixelation, maybe slight on top and bottom of the screen.

audio - no problems, nice and direct

Movie - hmmmmm thought this was gonna be funny and it wasnt, i loved Bruce Campbell in the Evil Dead's cz of his good one liners, but this was not present in Bubba Ho-Tep, theres a couple of slightly funny moments but thats it. And as for it being a horror well dont worry u wont be having nighmares tonite, the mummy was poor and to be defeated by two 70year olds proves how shite a bad guy he was! I dont wanna diss this film too much cz it wasnt 'bad' it just definately wasn't 'good' and far from a classic!!
