It specifically says in the E-Mail Notification:

But I keep getting multiple notifications about the SAME thread. I'm sure you're already aware of this problem. So why haven't you fixed it? To hard to fix or you just haven't gotten around to it or you just don't give a shit?

Go to user cp, edit Options, and look for this:

Use 'Email Notification' by default?
Using this option emails you whenever someone replies to a thread that you have participated in.

make sure No is marked.

i take it your grief is with the writers of the software, not us. and yes, always tick no to that option, its a pain in the ass. why its defaulted to on is beyond me.
