I don't know where to ask this..

Are the DivX rips that I download anamorphic? I want to know because I encode them as mpegs and create VCDs with them.

depends on what the source is.....tv show hdtv divx rips are all anamorphic...not sure about dvd rips.

AVI files are primarily intended for playing on a computer, and since normally the pixels on your display are square, no, they are not anamorphic.

The display aspect ratio is always 1:1, so for example the actual aspect ratio of a 640x272 res. file is 2.35:1

So, if I play them on a widescreen TV, there will be black lines on each side of the picture, not to mention on the film itself?

Not necessarily.

You can control how the file is displayed by using the picture modes on your TV. Widescreen TVs will have a 4:3 mode (puts black bars to the sides) a 16:9 mode (for anamorphic stuff), and they should also have a "zoom" option which will stretch non-anamorphic video to fill the screen.

Okay. So if I use the "zoom" option then, won't it pixelate the picture I'm seeing due to the quality of the rip?

Just encode the AVI file back to kvcd / vcd / svcd / dvd. most ppl rip to xvid / Divx to save space on pc & for faster sharing.Have a look at www.vcdhelp.com *happy Encoding*
