If you fancy stepping away from the major brands like SONY, PANASONIC and the rest of their ilk here's a decent player that doesn't carry a hefty price tag.. I'm talking about the CYBERHOME CH-400 (available in the UK from WHSmith stores)..

I had never heard of the brand when I bought the original CYBERHOME AD-L528 DVD player when it was released early on in the DVD boom and for a mere £90 was very pleasantly surprised. Not only did it handle proper UK DVDs but with a simple 'handset hack' it was multi-regional too.

The AD-L528 served me faithfully and upon it's replacement's release I upgraded to the CH-400 which is the same trusty player but in a much smaller scale and it still plays everything from DVDs (any region) to DVD-R's, VCDs, SVCDs and MP3s too..

Although not a well-known brand because of my good experiences with it I have recommended the CYBERHOME line to my Brother, my Father and several work-mates and they've raved about it too..

Currently you can grab the CYBERHOME CH-400 from WHSmith stores across the UK and it costs £40 although comes sans SCART cable so if you don't have one you'll need to puchase this separately..

Re-read what he posted... HE purchased it for £90 some time ago but now they're only £40 (about $65-70?) although you can get multi-region DivX compatible players over here now for as little as £25 if you look hard enough.

Just started first round with CyberHome.

Had two friends buy 2 players for < $30 US each.

Also bought my 5 yr old a portable Cyberhome DVD player (with LCD screen attached) for about $150 US.

Both of them play everything except for .avi's.

My replacement for APEX (1110w), which is now out the door since it won't play some ProDisc-R 8x DVD's.

i agree this should be the player of the year.
my portable plays dvd-r/dvd+r/non standard vcd/vcd/svcd/kvcd/mvcd/xvcd/ntsc or pal. and some .mpg files..

If you are having problems playing files get one of these and you wount..
