you can use DVD2SVCD (just select input as avi and output as DVD)....there are options for subtitles in there.

But dont look for them on the "subtitles" tab. Thats for subs from .vob files.
Once you load your movie to convert, do the set up and then hit the "Go" button on the "Conversion" tab...when you do you will be presented with a small menu and one of the items is "Add External Subtitle Stream" . I think it only supports text subtitle files... like your .srt.

Xvid Subtitles

.........or a really easy option (as long as you don't mind permanent subs - my deaf girlfriend doesn't) you could use NeroVision (it'll do, I 'spose....) and do this

1 Install the latest FFDShow
2 Give the .avi file the same name as the .srt file, i.e movie.avi, movie.srt and put them in the same folder
3. Open up FFDShow vid config and tell it where to find your .srt file
4. Fire up NeroVision and encode
5. Hey presto, subbed

I THINK that is how its done......
