HERE IS THE MILLION DOLLAR QUESTION?

Should I get avi's and convert to vcd? or get avi's and convert to dvd or should i just get the vcd and burn?. can someone set me straight on this!.

depends.....the only thing i don't like about the 642 is that if you have an anamorphic avi, it won't display right on your widescreen tv....

if it's a high quality xvid and it warrants a dvd, converting it to anamorphic dvd is the best option for me....however, most of the time i just download the dvdr's anyways

I've never seen an anamorphic AVI - I know that there is an option in the XviD encoder for changing the pixel aspect ratio, but square (1:1) is the default and it does say that using anything else is likely to be ignored by the player.

I guess that didn't come out right....what I meant was an avi with a widescreen resolution.....and yeah, most AVI's I've seen have a pixel aspect ratio of 1:1, with the exception of DV, which is usually 0.9:1

Never used a hardware player, but I've used PC with TV out to watch AVIs.

ATi graphics card drivers have an option to select 4:3 or 16:9 TV shape in the theater mode settings, but I never use theater mode, instead I use the "zoom" picture mode on my TV. Can't you just do something like that?

Yeah I could use zoom, but that cuts off some of the horizontal resolution too....ohtwell, I'm getting a HTPC soon, so I'll be hooking it up to my tv's DVI input anyways..can't wait

Converting to DVD... if you really need to!

I have tried numerous ways to convert an AVI to DVD with little success. But a couple of months back I stumbled upon a great program called DVDSANTA. You seem to be able to drop any video file into it and it will convert straight to VOB files for burning to DVD. I managed to convert Incredibles in 2 hours and I also dropped the high res quicktime FANTASTIC FOUR trailer into it and that converted too. Then I used DVD2ONE to splice the two together. I now have incredibles with the F4 trailer at the start.

Also, these two part AVI's with Dolby Digital can be joined with Virtua Dub and converted with the DD5.1 intact.

I've had a few AVI's where it warns the encoding is wrong and tries to compensate but you usually end up with the sound badly out of sync. Luckily these AVI's are few and far between.

Give DVDSANTA a try!!!

There are three programs I have used in my search to find the best avi to DVD converter. Here is my summation.

Cucosoft AVI to DVD converter
Quality: Excellent.
Time: Takes the longest. A 700mb film will take 4 - 8 hrs
User friendly: Easy to use, add file and select a couple options.
Final DVD: Adds chapters and allows fast forwarding.
Other Allows you to merge several avi files.

DVD Santa
Quality: Very good.
Time: Fairly quick. A 700mb film will take 2 - 4 hrs
User friendly: Easy to use, add file and select a couple options.
Final DVD: No chapters but allows fast forwarding.
Other Allows you to merge several avi files but sometimes merges them in the wrong order.

WinAVI video converter
Quality: Very good.
Time: Very fast. A 700mb film will take 1 - 2 hrs
User friendly: Easy to use, add file and select a couple options.
Final DVD: Chapters but no fast forwarding.
Other Single avi's only.

If I want real good quality and a DVD that has chapters and fast forwarding then I use Cucosoft. Although it takes the longest I just leave the program to run over night. I have ahd too many discrepancies with the other two.
