Irc noobie - How to hide your IP

Hello !

I never used IRC (only usenet, Ftp).

Now i have a Tv show that i can't find anywhere else so i gave irc a go.

I just noticed that my IP is showing if someone is making a /whois command on my nick.

I have googeled and found out that i have to cloak my ip - but no how to....

I found "bnc" is this any good ?

Could someone plz tell me how to do this or send me a link ??

Any Help will be greatly appreciated

I dont see the big deal if someone sees your ip on a irc channel. But SurfAnonymous is a good program that can mask your ip on irc. Good luck.

yeah... shouldnt be a problem IF you have your box secured. There are some little shits on irc just looking for someone to execute a script on so it pays to be secure. You can check if you are at gibson research's website:
http://www.grc.com/default.htm scroll down and click the "ShieldsUP" link and it will scan your computer and tell you if you have any vulnerabilities.

A bnc is a very good way to go but youll need a shell acct that allows em. If you google "shells bnc" (without quotes of course=) you will find alot of fairly cheap shell providers...you can usually find a bnc shell acct for around 4 or 5 bux US a month. There are free shell accts out there but i dont think they allow psybnc. If im wrong Im sure someone will bring it to my attention. Here is a link to a nice biginner tutorial on psybnc so you can see what yould be getting yourself into: http://www.jestrix.net/tuts/psy.html

some networks have whats called "hostname mangling" where it sets the last 2 octets in you ip to 255.255.
to give that a try...in your status window type /mode <yournick> +h if its not supported then itll just give you an error msg saying "Unknown MODE flag". it wont get you in any trouble so its worth a try.

since youre new to irc ill give you a link to a pretty cool site that i used to use alot...it has a nice channel/topic keyword search so you can try to find what youre looking for...not specific releases (you can always try...it may be iin the topic) but channels that specialize in tv or xdcc or whatever...give it a shot and be creative =p http://irc.netsplit.de/ click the large square "eye" with "Channels" written on it...that will take you to the search engine.
hope this helps

YW,
...and I Dont blame you a bit... IRC leeching is an ugly proposition anymore, has been so for a number of years. Irc is still fun though... and who knows, if you stick around for a while you may meet some "peepz" that can "Hoox0r" you up with some "leet ax" =p

I do lots of 'whois' on irc, cause I'm nosey.

One of them was prolly me.
