need help cconverting a VOB file to MPG

Hi everyone

I have two VOB files extracted from an ISO file. They play fine on my system with PowerDVD and with VLC.

Now I would like to burn the files onto CD in VCD format. To do that, I think I need to convert the VOB to a straight MPEG format. Which I've tried to do using the trial version of TMPGENC Plus. It seems to work, creates a valid file that playa on my system, but it doesn't convert the entire VOB, just the first fifteen minutes or so. As far as I can tell there are no restrictions with TMPGENC Plus during the trial period; it just craps out after the first 15 minutes.

Any ideas on what I can try, or another program I can use?

Thanks

Im pretty sure you can just drop the VOB in playlist in Nero and it will burn fine, no need to convert.

Coz' VOB is already a sort of dvd format so why convert it?

Well I thought that Nero would only take straight MPG files. I think it will convert AVI but I'm not sure.

I'll try the VOB file and see what happens.

mmmkay kiddies.....Mx2 to the rescue. No Nero wont take vobs. You need to convert to mpg.

ok well i think it actually depends on what version of nero.

if you have a dvd burner and wants to burn the vobs straight to cd then yes nero can load that only if u have version 6.0 or higher...but if u want to convert the vobs into a vcd (mpeg1) then u need to use
1. dvd2avi
2. tmpgenc or any other converter

now u gots to use dvd2avi and click on file then click on load then load the vob and it will auto load all the vobs then click ok then click on audio option and make sure its on track 1 then click on channel format and it click on dolby digital...and leave everything else as is...then click on file then save project...after that load tmpgenc and load the .d2v file to the video and the other file (i forgot what file it is) in the audio file then encode...

hope that helps?!

Ok. First things first, you cant burn vobs to a cd. YOu also say if you want to convert vobs into mpeg use a program called dvdtoavi.

yea u forgot the 2nd part of it...TMPGENC...you just need dvd2avi to spit out 2 files for u to load up in tmpgenc...and you convert from there......

load all the vobs into dvd2avi and when u save project it will give u .d2v and .ac3

first convert .ac3 into .wav with any audio converting programs
then load tmpgenc and load .d2v into video and .wav into audio and then convert....

VOB is a container format, containing MPEG2 video and XX Audio.

What you need to do is:

* Demux video and audio (DVD2Avi)
* Re-encode the audio with beSweet to mp2 (mpeg-2) audio
* Remux the mpeg2 video + mpeg2 audio (tmpgenc -> mpegtools -> simple mux)

You dont have to re-encode video, this job will only take about 10 minutes

or u could try winavi converter....great for n00bs and experienced guys too....

would a dvd compliant mpeg2 be ok to use on a svcd? would you not have to patch headers to alter the resolution?

The best question is...why do you want to do this?

I guess stormer2k already asked this, but really why? If you want files small enough to make VCDs this VOB ain't gonna work, your gonna have to split it, re-encode it, alot of trouble for what purpose? Burn it to DVD-R and be done with it.

DVD Mpeg2 has a to high bitrate. The max bitrate for svcd is 2450 if i recall ok. I dont know if svcd compliant mpegs are bounded to a specific resolution, you have to look that up.

It does however needs re-encoding (i wonder why you want to convert dvd to svcd, why dont you just burn it on a dvdr?)

Am bored so did an experiment...

Grab any sample of a movie from net, convert it to VOB (e.g. by using Ashampoo Movie Shrink & Burn 2 to convert it to MPEG2, it produces a VOB file.

Then drop the VOB in Nero 6, burn onto CD, and stick it into DVD player (I am using proline) and it plays perfect

i have an apex that will play vobs as files(it also plays mpeg standards without converting to vcd) but i also have a sylvania pos that doesnt....also my pioneer wont....the bottom line is is that it depends on the player...i think the newer cheaper brands are more versitile...

also tmpgenc is shit...never gave me anything but a headache.....canopus procoder 2.0 and mpeg-vcr accept vobs and easily spits out mpeg 1s and 2s...they convert audio from 48000 to 44100 and video from 720 to 480...both conversions are necissary for nero or some other program to convert and burn (s)vcds....they are both user friendly

depending on your processor speeds it could take anywhere from 1 - 3.5 hrs per disc without nero burn time

if all else fails...buy a $40 apex and forget everything i said

On this occasion you might want to try a XXXtoXXX program, since this program (DVD2SVCD) is the best frontend available for TMPGEnc, Cinema Craft Encoder etc (and CCE is the best MPEG2 encoder available ).

Also, considering Doom9.org has a help and support forum for DVD2SVCD indicates it's a good program
