File too large for nero CD-R?

I've had this happen to me several times and I need some help. I've downloaded a file that is 689 MB, when I try to use nero to make a VCD it says that the file is too big to fit on a CD-R. I don't have any trouble with some files that ride the 700 MB line but some I do. I have nero set to overburn but the red line on this file goes over 800 MB. Any help? Thanx.

Remember that "size", and 'actual size' on disk are different things.

The actual size maybe over 800 megs, while size on disk may be 689

Sounds to me like the 689MB file you downloaded is an AVI, and you're using Nero to convert it to a VCD - this is a bad idea.

If you want to play on a standalone, either download a proper VCD/SVCD image in the first place, or get a standalone with AVI (MPEG-4) playback support.

You are correct it is an AVI, however I have used nero to convert AVI's to VCD before and it worked fine. I have an older DVD player that I really like alot because it plays VCDs but when I burn the image using the bin/cue files the cd will not play in my DVD player. The cds with the image play fine on all of my computers but they don't play in my living room, hence the need for me to convert to VCD.

I found the answer to my problem...winavi, problem solved.

well just in case you dont want to use winavi and use nero (although i dont recommend this) in order to fit it onto the cd you must reduce the bitrate via the "more" options

Depends on how you have Nero set up, and how big the CDR's are.

If I remember correctly, Nero's default disc sizes (yellow/red lines) are based on a standard 70min CD. Even if you put an 80min CD in the drive, Nero will still think the files are too large (since most SVCDs seem to be sized to fit 80min discs). At least, it does on mine.. not sure if they've fixed that in recent releases or not. I just went in and raised the "redline" level to the 80min mark, and it hasn't given me any trouble.

But, if you're still using 70min CDs, you'll have problems.. I had that trouble back in the day, because I was under the impression that my DVD player couldn't read 80min discs, so I'd have to re-encode everything I downloaded to fit on a smaller disc. Needless to say, once I finally switched to 80min discs, it saved me a hell of a lot of trouble and time to burn stuff.
