Topsites

Ive been gettin a lot fo releases over the years from most groups, and started off using p2p like kazaa and morpheus, then i moved on to IRC and torrents, but recently ive been using newsgroups, and i cant complain, each way ive d/led has suited me at the time and ive been happy, but the thing ive always wondered is what are the "topsites"? i hear mentioned by ppl? is it an ftp used only by the release group themselves? or is there something much better than usenet out there?

I think most people here use ftps and some usenet. But I don't think YOU will ever get onto a "topsite". Mostly very hard to get access to. Mostly on university servers and with LOTS of security. U have to contribute YOURSELF to the scene to even get close to any real site...
All files come from topsites and are transferred by couriers to other ftps/FXP that we normal people can use...

Bah, they never shut down their servers and have VERY fast connections and with a little bit of knowledge you can easily 'hide' the ftp. And when it's discoverd it's not really a problem... No real track to any members when it is done propaly.

Some well-known groups have indeed run HQs and/or merge boxes on .edu's ... but never topsites. Maybe this guy is confusing the two.

Number one rule of affilling: "Don't affil on a US EDU."

I used to work at a Uni. where a kid was busted for putting ftp servers on machines. The Uni. had little if any security until this was discovered. Last I heard he was thrown out of school. I dunno if anything else happened to him.
An edu line is basically a trap nowadays but they used to be nice

1) colo (ur an idiot)
2) corp (the sysadmin is an idiot)
3) fbi honeypots (pwned!)
or
4) uni (read: we know you're running a topsite/dump even if we don't cap you...pwned!)

there used to be some sweet 100mbit .us edu sites, but they were all quickly taken out about 4 or 5 years ago. the heyday of the scene is gone, a part of which was .us edu's. rip.
