-- how safe? (http://www.vcdhq.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=65762)

how safe?

I had a question, and if this feels inapproporiate to the forum, please delete /edit it, but please don't block me. As far as my knowledge goes, i'm not breaking any rules.

I was wondering, since all those MPAA guys sueing ppl, and all the other shit that's happening, how safe is it to download stuff?

Should I worry about being sued? Or is that just for some chosen few?

Posted by manal on 08-22-2005 05:07 AM:

im not goign to comment on how safe it is

that all depends on how good you are at secureing your connections , running through procys, usening difrent subnet masks. etc. its all about how good you are at covering your tracks. Your isp. and basic other skills

but anyways. i have heard from a freind of mine that a isp told him to stop downloading a certain file the isp was getting trouble for and instead of getting in trouble for it he mearly toidl them he thought he was downloading "a game"

suprisingly the dumb isp believed him

absotively untrue...in every state in the u.s., downloading copywrited files is definitely illegal..

Nowhere is "safe" but I'd say Usenet is probably the least risky now, although a simple change in law would soon fuck that up. Otherwise, don't use anything that "any" member of the public can get access to, at least go for something that requires some form of limited screening, even if it's only an trusted/invite system... Then pray that the law doesn't get invited to your party

You still have to be seriously unlucky to get caught, unless you're using some huge wide-open P2P/Torrent thing.

Thanks NS

Yeah, I thought with so many ppl downloading stuff, and so many of my friends doing so much, i imagined you'll have to be unlucky to get caught.

Thanks for the advice.

Posted by manal on 08-22-2005 10:26 PM:

well you haft to be unlucky really to get prosecuted.

alot of people just get warnings form the isp saying they where contacted and you should stop.

Posted by souljor on 08-23-2005 04:55 PM:

private ftp sites are probably the safest, except of course when it emerges the site was being run by the fbi

Posted by max2 on 08-23-2005 04:57 PM:

Usenet

Posted by space_cowboy on 08-23-2005 04:59 PM:

ouch....you referring to anyone in particular?

Posted by sungsu on 09-11-2005 03:24 AM:

okay, so
i use usenet, and the server does not log anything.(or says so)

i download about

1 movie/2weeks.
i cut down the movies i download because of the risks, and i only get movies that sound really great, or can't get it otherwise.

I'm not really risking much, right?

Posted by FrightfoO on 09-11-2005 03:31 AM:

To have no risk at all don't share copyrighted material at all, period. Where's the fun in that though?

Posted by snitzle_iii on 09-15-2005 10:33 AM:

internet cops are going to get you. isp can tell everything your dling better cover your tracks

my isp. which ill keep unnamed. always gives peoplse one warning if they get contactedabout you getting caught. if you get one of those your doing something wrong

Posted by Miller on 09-15-2005 02:34 PM:

US colos are the safest place to be!!!!
hahahha

but seriously, if your worried about downloading i think your a little to parinoid, its not like your the source off all the illegal shit on the net, not really worth the time and money investments to arrest you over downloading your next Skin Flick

Do they want you??? If they do then your fucked

Posted by sungsu on 09-16-2005 12:15 AM:

Simple be the source of the downloaders

All i am saying is its the hand that feeds that they concentrate there efforts on
Busting the downloaders every now and again is just scare tatics so people like yourself and me think twice

A little publicity about busting a few downloaders goes a long way
