File and Print Sharing Help
Around a week ago I lost access to all my file shares on this XP box. I only worry about it as I use it to stream to Xbox Media Center. All other computers on network work fine.
On an ordinary boot XP decided to lockup and File Sharing hasn't worked since. Virus/Spyware ran all the time and not an issue.
I guess my question has anyone expirienced this? Restore didn't save me (as always). I really can't do a clean install for awhile.
I've tried reboots modem/router/machine Renews on IP. Checked if settings were off in machine. Creating a new network and all have failed.
I still can ftp into xbox. With classes starting having a network printer sounds nice though .
Have you tried a different or NIC on the PC? I'm having an issue right now, and it's completely because of the router. I think my config file is corrupt, so I will have to re-setup everything from scratch. That and by tomorrow I have a back-up router in place for next time. I have only one machine I have that is currently getting an IP from the router (out of 6). And that is because I always have it on. You wouldn't happen to have a D-Link router? Bad router/config file (for me) = Sharing stops.
Can I just clarify what you're saying...
That NONE of the PC's on the network (or the Xbox) can now see the resources on the "affected" PC?
If that's the case, try this for starters, it might help narrow things down:
1. Reboot/reset your router
2. Do Start>Run>Services.msc (check for services that pertain to file and print sharing such as "Computer Browser", "Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) / Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)" and similar - look for any that are set to startup automatically but aren't actually running/started... It could be that XP cannot start the F&P sharing because one of the required services is cunted)
3. Do Start>Run>Eventvwr (clear the event logs, reboot then check the event logs again. Look out for any errors or warnings, especially those pertaining to starting services)
