An interesting one again... Got the similar dilema that I had with Brothers Grimm. How good was the source to make this look this good?!
Well, per pixel, the bitrate on this release is technically better than Brothers Grimm. So for those that thought Brothers Grimm was awesome, this is better.
Brothers Grimm is a bitrate of 3730kbit/sec (I think) @ 1.85:1. Which is around a 2909kbit/sec @ 2.35:1... (RATIO COMPARE... 2.35 is 78% of the size of 1.85...)
Emily Rose is a bitrate of 3150kbit/sec @ 2.35:1. (or reversely is around a 4038kbit/sec @ 1.85:1)
So for anyone that accepted Grimm, should enjoy this 8% more
But again, how good was that source. The picture DOES look really soft (something I've noticed actually in ALL Replica releases lately), and I am sure that is key. Zero artifacting is impossible at these kinds of bitrates unless you blur things up a bit. Of course, on a CRT, you'll be in heaven. Even on a big TV it was pretty good. I think back to is how nice and sharp the untouched Fantastic Four was, and how blurrly the R1 JKR release was (also without artifacts). This just may be the same.
Video 8/10 - It's soft... That's my only complaint. Standard encoding issues, but that would be at almost any bitrate. No artifacting or any other problems. At 3130kbit/sec, it's as good as it gets.
DVD-R 6/10 - Being a movie only guy for years, I have to stay consistent. Bitrate could have been an easy 1000kbit/sec better, if not untouched... But credit for the effort. Keeping extras (not to mention re-coding them) takes time and glad to see they put quality and time before the stupid "warez race".
A+ for effort. If you like extras, this is a 10/10 release! If you have a 27" CRT, it's a 10/10 release. If you are a picky movie only asshole, it's a 6/10 The above was written from a "movie only" guy's perspective.
Put it in my DVD player like any nomral person would & the quality looks just as good as i'd expect from a store bought copy.
10/10/? will watch later
Very great rls... First dvdr I've watched from start to finish in my Xbox 360... My standalone I think is dying.
10/10/8
I was pleasantly surprised how the movie was written and acted out - Not what I suspected. It's not your typical hollywood horror movie as of late (has a unique approach to it's story telling and it's not very cheezy at all).
I was very happy with it.
porco -- I'm not saying anything you said was inaccurate, but let me say I'm an A/V enthusiast and azzhole-prick but even I disagree with most all of your ratings and thoughts. Not that I think you're wrong, but I do think you're too critical most all of the time. I do appreciate your knowledge and insight, though, because it does surpass that of most.

BTW< how is the XBox360 for DVD video? It's basically a 720p component player I guess (with the 720p upconversion on regular DVDs)...

Also, the 360 won't play WMV HD discs nor stream them from an XP or XPMCE machine... You have to encode the WMV HD discs onto your pc hard drive in order to stream them to the 360. Hopefully they'll fix this in the future.
I've been talking about Blu-Ray for many years - when a simple search for it only returned two or three hits on google! I was very surprised when information on the HD-DVD format was being discussed a short time later.
Anyhow, this isn't a board about politics so I won't get into why I think one is better than the other. I will say, however, that for either new format to have as big of an impact as regular DVDs to american consumers they will have to wait a number of years... If this war continues between the new formats, too, it will make it even worse for both companies. I remember back when they were in serious talks to form a unified format (they still are talking about it but discussions have basically come to a hault).
Oh well. You're right, though, in that the cycle will continue for peoples' levels of expectation. That will always be the case, really, especially myself. When it comes to scene releases, though, I'm not so critical of releases. To each their own.

I wonder if Sony learned from its mistakes (Beta )

Sony only lost the Beta vs. VHS war, really, because of porn. If porn comes out strong favoring HD-DVD or BR then there's a very high chance that format will win in this millinia, too.
The scene in the church where she walks in after seeing all that crap and the dude follows her in, is it normal that it seems to freeze for maybe a second when it's focusing in on her eyes (right after the guy enters the door)?
