Thumbs up

If DVD Screeners could be sexy this one would be, supremo quality, some scrollers. But without scrollers you wouldn't feel special because u got ur hands on a dvd screener because of the internet. And pirates hard at work.

Frankly pretty grizzly for DVD source.
It's a long movie, which limits bitrate severely. However, the main problem here for me is down to scene rules. Why CCE is the only acceptable encoder I don't know. Yeah, standardisation levels the playing field when groups are racing to release but at low bitrate there are freeware encoders that do better.

Doing some experiments with the Philosophers Stone (similar length movie of which I have retail DVD) I can get much nicer results using simple filters (add undot() and deen() to avisynth script) and HC to encode, than I can with 8-pass CCE.

The ratings are based on DVD source. The low rating for video should not detract from the fact it is the best release out there so far, by a country mile.

Video -6 Blocky and coarse. Also, upping the gamma a touch may have helped on the many dark scenes

Audio-10 Untouched DD5.1 - it don't get better

Movie-6 Worst of the series so far IMO

Dunno where the above bitch-fest comes from, unless we are watching different versions of this movie.

Video 7/10 - Well, I know what the retails look like for the first 3, and I know this is far from it. Equally, all 3 previous Potter re-codes also get around 7 out of 10. This one is slightly worse (probably because the orig has CBR video which is common on DVD screeners). No macro blocking in this encode. Artifacting is frequent, but it is a 154 min movie. Video is not too dark either, looks just about right (it is a dark movie). But you can always up the brightness on your TV/monitor or PowerDVD or whatever you're playing it with. Also video is soft, but not grainy (well, there is a bit of grain, it's not a digital print... But nothing like what is described). You want grainy, check out Hustle and Flow, 21 Grams, those are grainy.

CURIOUS QUESTION: Which freeware encoders do a better job than CCE? Sounds pretty full of shit to me. Reason CCE is used because it is the best. Canopus Procoder is also pretty good (hence why it is also acceptable now).

DVD-R 10/10 - Upwards of 3 months early (March 7, 2006 R1 date), can't complain. Most of the DVD was used just for video (4.32g) to ensure best possible until the retail comes out.

It is a good job all things considered. This will hold me over until I buy it.

well this movie was great and the quality was great i watched it on my toshiba dlp projector on a 10ft by 10 ft screen and the pic was smooth clear and not to dark audio was nice and crisp plus i pre watch a lil on my 20 inch plasma and same thing so i dont know what every 1 is complaining about grainy.

video:9 (due to scroll but oh well)
audio: 10
movie: 10 (best one yet)

DVD screener - what more can one ask besides the retail. This will do until then. Much improvement over the TC or other releases.
