The Host (2006) - "Gwoemul"

It's here...it's finally here

I haven't seen it yet, but I'm waitng up til whatever time it takes to watch it.

How good is it? It's the best monster movie EVER! How do I know? Cos it's a Korean movie...and those fuckers know how to pull all the strings and make movies how they should be made. Not to mention it's smashed all box office records in SK...and considering the quality of cinema that they output that's a pretty damn good recommendation!

Directed by Bong Joon-ho, he of the brilliant "Memories of Murder" (if you haven't seen it you're a pussy!) and "Barking Dogs Never Bite" (...don't make me call you pussy again! See it.).

It stars possibly the best actor on the planet now, Song Kang-ho, a staple player in Chan-wook Park movies and been in at least 10 of the best movies of the last decade or so.

Can't wait

EDIT: well shiver me fucking timbers...this has already been out for a day: The.Host.2006.DVDR-AXDVD...and there's me wetting my knickers about the DVD-rip. Oh joy

EXCELLENT!

Funny, tragic, scary (well, tense), brutal, sweet, political...

Unlike almost everything that's come since the days of Universal in terms of monster movies, it's a movie first and foremost - so it has characters, biographies, development, story, emotion... - and, this is the clincher, it has a monster in it. Geddit? It's not a monster movie. It's a movie with a monster in it.

If you've ever seen 'Save The Green Planet' then you'll know how a movie can cover just about every genre and not fail at any of them. That's what The Host does.

I don't have the time or energy to talk about all the things the movie does right, so let's look at issues: the monster...it's a funny looking fucker But that doesn't detract, because even though they don't humanise it any way...you do develop an understanding of it...and with it And there aren't the big explosion scenes (though in truth I only realised that now, the film doesn't really want for lack of them).

9/10. Watch it. Or die in agony like the pus-filled maggot you are.

hmmm...

I remember hearing about the Host a while back and yesterday got the xvid copy. Problem for me is that I have no idea how to use the sub files. Any suggestions? I'm sure this violates some rule of asking for help, but I've been spending all my free time trying to figure this s**t out. All I want to do is watch this through vlc.

If you got the PosTX rip (and that's about a 99.9% chance) then make sure you've got a 'The.Host.SUBREPACK-PosTX/postx-th.subrepack.rar' file with it. The original release had fucked subs.

Extract the subs to the SAME directory that the extracted avi files are in: you should have 'postx-tha.avi' and a matching idx and sub file (and the same for 'postx-thb.avi'). That's it. Just open the postx-tha.avi and vlc will automatically spot the subs. Right click on your vlc window, select the option 'Subtitles Track' and just select English.

If for any reason you don't see the subs, go:

Settings > Preferences > Video

and select Subtitles/OSD, make sure 'On Screen Display' and 'Autodetect Sub Files' are checked and use the 'Browse' to manually navigate to the subs.

Now fuck off and watch the movie.
