the mpg tip

ok since i wanted to be the first person to post something useful in the new forum here is my ego driven tip.

before i learned about VCD's i had downloaded and saved on CD many music video's. i burned plain old data CD's of various format video files. im talking video files of both avi and mpg in varied resoultions and bitrates.

i have quite a few CD's of music video's that i have always been stuck watching with a computer. so the other day i tried tossing in one of these data CD's and seeing what would happen if i played it on my apex AD-1500 player.

the player read the disc as it would an mp3 CD. it gave me a listing based on the file names. when i tried to play them i discovered that the files that were in the proper format for VCD would play from the data CD's i had. of course not all of the files would play. other files that were in other formats would in some cases play partially. for instance an mpg file with the incorect resolution played but only displayed on 1/4 of the screen, DivX files would play the audio (since DivX usually uses MPG layer 3 audio) just as if it was an mp3.

so if you have some old CD's that you backed up as plain old data CD's give them a try. i sure was happy to find out that i could still view and use some of these files as they are on the data CD. it really saves me alot of time and effort being able to drop in the data CD's instead of re-authoring several CD's so i can watch some music videos. give it a try in your player and you may find you have an extra use for some of those old backups that you have been to busy or uninspired to transfer over to VCD.

Its similar to my player (except i knew mine could do that i haven't tried with an AVI file, but i imagine u just hear the audio, and the screen just displays the folder (like playing an mp3)

uhhhhh the point was that i have a pile of already burned CD's that are not as useless as i thought.

i would flame you mercilously about reading comprehension if i was not reformed by the orderly and friendly demeanor of the board thanks to the outstanding moderation on the forum.
