First Wii mod chip announced
OH LORDY
Might be fake but I'm kinda expecting an announcement soon anyway, considering it sounds like "they" basically didn't bother to do anything sexy with the protection:
Wiinja Modchip
quote:Video here
The first Wii modchip has been announced and will be ready to ship on February 1st. It features:
- Run your own region (PAL/NTSC) backups directly
- 5 Cables to solder
- Easy Installation
- Modchip not upgradable
I can confirm the modchip is real as I have been in contact with the developers for a few weeks and they should shortly be uploading a video to prove it. In the meantime you can check out two photos of the modchip below. I will update with more news soon once I get to speak to the developers again.

spunktastic! although it might be a good while before i take the plunge.
Agreed... No doubt if it's real it will open the floodgates for modchips - I'll wait until I can see what direction they're heading in and what countermeasures (if any) Nintendo takes. I think I'll at least wait until somebody produces a chip thats upgradeable and can be switched off.

Damn right mate, will be interesting to see what happens in respect to the chip, Wii Connect 24 and how they will work together (updates, blocking etc)
To be honest, if i couldn't use Connect 24 with a chip, i'd have to give the chip a miss.
Update: !!NEWS CHANNEL NOW WORKING!! And its rather good!
better wait the upgradable one, nintendo will take contra-mesaures, for me inside Wii's firmware there is something that study the 'new thing' inside Wii and send info to Nintendo server. This is the new era for network consoles, developers will play this chance, to make better protections.

Hopefully, because its a drive mod (like the XBox 360) the Wii wont even realise the chip is installed... I'm still waiting though
Homebrew would be nice too
I've installed and had a quick look at the News Channel and although it's quite slick in some areas (like the world map and how the articles "stack up" over each region as you zoom out) it looks like a website from 1998 when reading articles - hopefully it will be prettied-up and possibly even have some streaming "stuff" in the long run.

The WiiNinja has been verified by the usual sources, and the video has been uploaded. As for wat the mod does, it really isnt a drive mod. Because it will not allow you to run homebrew code. As for protections and uploadeing to servers, i highly doubt thats a issue, cuz these mod guys would know, cuz in order to crack they've studied how it works, and decrypted the firmware, so im sure they know whats up.
I'm thinkin of a gettin a wii, i wont use it for online shit, cuz i have my ps3 for that.
I watched that Console Hacking Conference TMBCinc put on (that german hacker geneuis) and he said the protection on the wii is very very similar to the gamecube, as the way it checks discs and so on, he said to gain axx to the drive u just need to brute force the pass, he also said that it was very easy to do, and not a problem to break. He also said the reason homebrew will not work on the wii atm, is because the data on the disc is encrypted and until they can get the key and/or crack the encryption then it will be impossible to boot homebrew, but direct copies of games are not a problem.
This is actually what I was waiting for when determining which console to purchase... we (my wife and I) had narrowed it down to 360 or wii, with wii slightly ahead due to its family friendly library... but this just throws it leagues ahead of the others.
the last hurdle will be the encoding of previous gen console titles to dvd (i.e. dropping every nes, turbo16, snes, and n64 game onto a single dvd)...
then im 100% sold.
in fact, if i could have that, i wouldnt think twice about purchasing every new game for the wii without batting an eye.

curious this: Stealth even when chip is enabled
if true for nintendo, they will never have feedbacks about patched hard Wii
... Just biding my time until the local chip-me-do has the Cyclowiz in stock. Seems a shame to abuse my brand new Wii like this but I promise I'll still be buying the good shit that I actually *want* Mr Nintendo, because I love you.

umh also this is stealth mode, I wonder if the way to be stealth is just a bridge stopping/bypassing info in the motherboard, or a cracking reverse software routine installed in the chip

talk about mark-up, 80 bucks for the shitty one.
what a loser
