Is the purpose of the HDMI usb port on my DVD player so I can stream movies from my pc? Here's my DVD player. Is there no s-video because of the HDMI?

HDMI isn't a USB port (or any other form of PC comms port), it's for high bitrate audio/video data... In other words, hi def TV. Chances are that port is for outputting to a HDTV - although why it's on the front is anybody's guess.

::EDIT:: Just checked again and that just looks like a normal USB port, the HDMI probably *is* on the back if the unit. My guess is, if you shove a portable hard disk/memory stick up that fucker, you'll be able to play xvid etc from it... Hopefully it's even capable of outputting HR xvid in full resolution via HDMI, if it is - I WANT ONE!

There aren't many standalone players around at the moment that can handle HR Xvid - the usual chipsets are limited to a max resolution of 720x576.

The players that can tend to be the network-capable affairs like this one.

I expected somebody to say something like that. It's a Philips DVP 5960.

definition of HDMI: overrated digital output that in a lot of cases is no better than the analogue output, despite its users swearing blind they can see a ton of difference that isn't there.

its nice to have, but i wouldn't worry too much about it.

Hdmi sucks overall is better quality but is overated. I have both HD dvd player and HD tv. I also see artifacts of red in solid colors. Such as wall in films. Problem is can't tell if its from the player or the TV. I am getting no support from either vendor, even though both are under warrenty. I can not get another player to test. So i am thinking of taking player to where I bought tv,let them figure it out. Iis almost like watching a dvd burn form an AVI you will see black pixelate. This just light colors shows red.

The Philips 5960 has HD upconverting which ups to 720p if I remember correctly. I own one, but not any HD receiver yet, so I haven't tested that part of it. And yes, the port on the front is a standard USB which I have a 300 GB drive attached to. The media you plug into it has to be formatted in FAT32 to be read, but with a tool like Paragon, you can partition the big drives to all fat32.

as a short time customer service guy for samsung's home entertainment division i got a lot of calls about hdmi and high def.

the official line was that it was a digital signal, and didnt go through a lossy digital to analog to digital conversion like component video did, and was therefore better quality.

i couldn't see a visual difference between the two, so my answer was:
the only thing hdmi is good for is consolidating cables (5 comp plus audio cables down to 1 cable) and that blu-ray and hd-dvd will be using HDCP protection that COULD POSSIBLY lower resolutions for component output to 720p and only allow 1080p through HDMI to HDCP capable displays.

and yeah, the usb on the front is just for playing photos, songs, or videos off a thumb drive.
