Windows not recognizing new harddrive

i just bought a nice new nifty 250gb drive
(WD ATA)

i installed the drive as a slave,
device manager sees it and reports okey doke
my bios sees it and reports correctly on type and size...

windows (explorer my computer etc.) does not see it
I KNOW i'm forgetting something fundamental which will make me feel foolish but..


plse help

NARF!

Assuming you're using XP, you haven't created a partition and formatted it yet.

:EDIT: ...creating a partition and formatting isn't obviously specific to XP but that's the guide I linked to.

its a new drive and i hadn't planned on partitioning(didn't realize i needed to nor format it)...but that makes sense..thx for the link... off i go

Yeah, it doesn't necessarily mean you want to break the physical drive into multiple logical drives. You still have to partition it even if you only create one partition. You then have to format the new partition(s).

as soon as i hit compmgmt.msc
(although The larger drives,are new to me)
it pretty much all came back to me lol

ok it is many hrs later...still formatting

wow this is taking ages lol i could swear i formatted my last maxtor in 20 mins.....


i may just cancel and use the maxblaster software to facilitate this...6 hrs and im still at 2%

Did you format it? FAT32 or NTFS?

Took like an hour to format my new Seagate, I didn't remember it taking that long when I installed a new one (also 120gb) in my desktop!
