DVD-RW drive acting slutty/Linux question
Lets start with the dvd drive. As the topic says she's been acting slutty lately. When using Nero to try and burn a CD it fails every time at 6% and i get a "power calibration error." When it comes to putting a DVD or DVDR into the drive, it wont even recognize that its in there. Personally i have no idea whats goin on or if the drive is just fucked. I've tried reinstalling the drivers a couple of times, but no luck at all.
I'm thinking of pulling the drive out and opening its case to clean the laser off to see if it makes a difference. I could also crack and buy a new one for dirt cheap, but id lik to get this one working. Any other suggestions as to what i could do to try and fix it?
Now for the next part... I need to get the damn burner working so I can burn my iso of Windows Vista and get it up and running. I've also decided that i want to instal some Linux on my other harddrive. I'm looking for recommendations as to what version I should go with. I've never really used it on a home computer before, but I figure i might as well, as I'm using it more and more at the uni.
Thanks for any help and suggestions.
Nate
The DISTRIBUTION you should you depends on how far up the scale you rank yourself as a power user. I fully recommend you try a "live distribution" like Knoppix before deciding on an install.
Some distributions that some members have used here:
Fedora (good desktop replacement (I've never used))
Ubuntu (good beginners curve)
Knoppix (live cd, Debian based)
Slackware (Power user heaven)
There are more....
