Media: older hardware, new software

Xvid/Divx has been around for years, So has dvd's. I used to play dvd's, xvids on my old p3 450mhz and they played without problem.

Of course the old software doesn't require hefty hardware. But now Xvid/divx/dvd's don't play as well as they used to.

I'm now running Vista, I use WMP11, I can't use VLC, it doesn't work for some reason. Winamp looks like shit when I use fullscreen. I also use Windows Media Center alot for movies and such.

Basically I feel I need a dual core JUST to watch Xvid/dvd's anymore. What in the hell is going on with software?

Am I the only one having this problem?

For this reason I am thinking of going back to XP media center ed. Just because of this.

In VLC's settings, navigate to "Video" and turn on the Overlay Video Output option... Or if it's already on, turn it off

In fact, monkey around in there, something will work... Eventually!

I haven't had this issue with VLC and Vista. THough I do have the Vista Codec Pack installed, as some of the codecs just don't work under vista when ported from their XP versions. Maybe that is the difference. <shrug>

VLC is garbage. MPC with ONLY the codecs you need is fucking beautiful

I used VLC for everything then I started to watch HD material. didn't look so good, because the filter VLC aren't that great

MPC + CoreAVC made everything look fucking sharp and beautiful

So did you ever get it sorted Para?
Are you using Ultimate, Home Premium, or ...?

I have Home Premium (Upgrade Version) on my laptop and VLC plays everything.
I have Ultimate on my new Desktop (OEM Version) and VLC plays nothing; except for sound.
I checked the settings, and they are exactly the same. I can find no reason why one will play and the other will not.

Any ideas? Anyone?

I can't seem to get it sorted. I tried MPC but it disables aero, So fuck that. I think Media center plays everything best at this rate. Media center is nice.
Vista Ultimate is what I'm running.

Is there an alternative to Media center? A app that acts in the same manner, An interface for media.

Although i do like vista,sp1 can't happen soon enough! many issues.

I'm using Ultimate and VLC works just fine :/ I can't use MPC without Vista throwing a wobbly and turning off Aero, and then if I try and resize the MPC window it crashes.

I'm going to downgrade to XP at some point next week because of the full-screen video mirroring loss.
