Wii: Opera Browser

FUCKHOLES! It's finally released and here is my oh-so-awesome (albeit small) review.

Firstly, the beta version of the browser worked well but my firt impressions of the final version are very good. Before I delve into the features though you might want to heed this warning... It's only free download for a month or two, then they're charging for the bastard

ok, now on with the browser!

The first thing you notice is the front screen has been rearranged and a few extra settings for shit like the toolbar (autohide etc) and proxy configuration are added. Beyond that I didn't see much that had changed with the exception of the load times, which is faster than the beta.

The browser itself is quite fast and slick although the zoom function (despite being more polished than the beta) is broken because you don't know what zoom level you're at and you cannot simply "reset" it. Secondly, when you press B to scroll you now get a directional line on screen so you know what direction the browser is trying to scroll in.

All pages load fine and I managed to enjoy some Flash-based porno streaming. It doesn't support Java but pretty much all other bases are covered including a reasonable onscreen keyboard and support for cookies. It also made a decent job of caching youtube videos (I tend to pause them at the start until the whole thing is cached so as to avoid stuttering)

The forward/back/favourite buttons are on a toolbar at the bottom of the screen which can be either left as is, auto-hidden or toggled on and off with the Wiimote - it works well but WHERE ARE THE TABS AND SEARCH BOX? There would be plenty of room for extra buttons/features on the toolbar if the existing buttons weren't the size of Gibraltar but hey, I'm sure there will be other versions in months/years to come

All in all it's a pretty decent effort, I can't really see any major fuck ups but it could be improved: a lack of tabbed browsing, Java and browser history spring to mind. It wont replace a PC based browser but its good for looking-up easy to navigate sites that don't require much text input.

I wont post scores for the bugger though, I doubt graphics and audio are relevent under the circumstances.

Bastards! Being too careful so no one fucks up their Wii. At least add java and have it disabled by default.

I'm a little disappointed they didn't update the flash player. I hope they offer constant updates for the browser so it doesn't get outdated.
