Modding an Xbox

Looking at getting an XBOX now that they're dirt cheap.

Can anyone tell me how difficult it might be to get it modded? I've heard there's no need to get a chip soldered into it as there is a "softmod" option?

What are the advantages of getting it modded? Thanks

not much unless you want to store games on a hard drive or play on xbox live, which you will still need an original game and switch the mod chip off.

A softmodded xbox is good enough and you can pick them up here in the uk for around £40.You can play online games with xlink kai.

I still have my xbox setup to my main tv.
Can't afford the 360 or the wii yet but I will have to bite the bullet soon as they have stopped making games for it now.
Still the xbox does have a good back catalogue of games.
Still worth buying.

softmod all the way, XMBC turns it into an awesome video/music player which will play any format thrown at it, its worth buying an xbox for XBMC alone, plus you will be able to play backup games, softmod is free but you need a few bits of equipment to install it. Try this link here, i used this guide when i softmodded my xbox:

Anybody have a correct copy of MechAssault and an Action Replay for softmodding it???

Posted by antihero on 05-28-2007 12:01 AM:

Did mine via Action Replay and Splinter Cell (the platinum version doesnt work, must be the original). Takes 5 minutes

Swapped the hard drive for a 250gb unit, and also hooked it up to a wireless ethernet adapter so i can stream movies and music from my pc, as well as being able to ftp wirelessly.

As an entertainment system its fantastic, just need to look into changing the fan as its a tad noisy!

The only downside to using SID is that once installed, its menu is (if selected) accessed by booting the xbox with the eject button. Not great if kids are using it. I softmodded a mates and on more than one occasion his little lad nearly killed it by messing in this menu. Just make sure you backup the eeprom, otherwise you wont be able to rescue it if something goes wrong (without chipping it).

have fun mate.

Yeah I was looking at getting Splinter Cell since I can't find 007 or MechAssault.

I thought all versions of Splinter Cell were exploitable?

Also whats "SID"?

Also I've gone to #xbins to get the latest version of XBMC but there are three versions?

FINAL-FAT-T3CH, FINAL-SLIM-T3CH and SVN blah blah T3CH

whats the difference? cheers!

Posted by antihero on 05-29-2007 01:06 AM:

the SLIM version is just a barebones edition, whereas FAT has extras like skins, trainers and plugins included.

As for the SVN (stands for Subversion), cant fully get my head round it, and i'll quote this from wiki cos it explains better than i could;

"Since XBMC is an open source software program, its development source code is stored on a publicly-accessible Subversion server. This code is constantly updated on a daily-basis by developers so the Subversion repository often contains more features than the most recent 'stable' release. Accordingly, executable builds from the Subversion repository are often released by third-parties. It should be noted, however, that executable builds from development versions typically contain bugs not present in the most recent 'stable' release versions of XBMC."

Plus...you dont need to fanny around on irc to get the builds, get them from t3ch's site
here

SID is Softmod Installer Deluxe by the guys at xbox-hq. Its an installer to get linux and the modded dashboards running. If you havent already done so, have a look here
. The tutorials on there dont mention updating the ms dash first though (usually done with an original xbox live enabled game) .You can then use Auto Installer Deluxe (AID) from disc to install other dashboards, apps, emulators etc.

And my apologies, but apparently you can use any version of Splinter Cell (i'm sure when i first got into it i was told otherwise, but hey) , as long its the first game not pandora tomorrow or chaos theory.
