wiikey disc brand compatability
Yesterday I modded my wii with wiikey, I think. It works fine with wii sports but backups wont play nor the wiikey configuration disk, Im assuming i have a wire that isnt connected enough.
The question is whether or not this can be a media problem, as everything Ive read says use good disks and burn slow, do certain brands not work at all? Im using Sony DVD-Rs. Can anyone confirm using these? Thanks!
I started using Datawrite disks and they were touch and go.. They would work, but only after about 5 or 6 ejects. Grinch recommended the Ritek G05 dye disks and they have been flawless. Burnt about 20 backups so far and they work first time, every time.
Here is the site I get them from... if you are in the UK they are worth a punt!

I agree on the RitekG05 dye although my Wii wasn't even happy with "cheap" G05 disks either... It LOVES the Sumvision certified grade-A disks from SVP though - just don't buy them all you cunts

Look at the pic above. I'll edit in a picture of the ones you can mod.
But there are three legs on the pin there that have been cut off. If they've been cut off, you can't mod it.
Well, you can but it involves either soldering to any stubs left ON the drive chip (very small) or burning/filing away the top plastic casing off the drive chip to reveal the pin legs below.
If you get one then I'd highly recommend taking it to a skilled modder, not some dodgy backstreet one.
I can solder to the drive chip legs (had to with mine as one of the solder pads fucked up) but I wouldn't dare burn away at the drive chip.

shit thanks for the replies here! I opened it up again without seeing the replies, now 1 last time to see if its the more difficult mod, probly is, its well secure and definately connected to the spots... grr...
:edit: assuming you mean the last 5 numbers including the final one in a box, then I should be able to mod it
hmph maybe a look at the drive to make sure....

"The Wii Serial Search is currently disabled while we gather data. It will automatically become available on August 1."
Apparently!
Anyway, check all your points are securily soldered (although don't yank on the wires as I pulled a solder pad off that way), just pull them gently. Check everything is wired up to the correct points.
ALso, if it's a D2C chipset (should say on the top) at present I believe it's completely unmoddable. Just read off the top of the chip and it'll tell you.

hmm... someone disabled my ability to pm... so how do you tell about the D2C chipset, it should say on top of what?
thanks again for the help!

That shows a picture. The chipset will physically have D2C wrote on top of it. Other than that it looks pretty identical. I'm not sure what serials you'll be looking for though, so you're best cracking open the machine.
If you can, take a picture of the soldering job you've done and post it up. I'll see if I can see any glaring faults or if it's "unmoddable"

I need to clean my room and find my tri-wing screwdriver, if i cant, my friend has one also.
I read somewhere else briefly that the chip you spoke of was just in PAL wii's, do you know if that has changed, as mine is a NTSC-U, Im rather sure the serial number thing you spoke of doesnt affect my model as its a couple thousand down from the cut off point... I will again thank you for your help, you have been extremely informative for those, like me, didnt know shit about some systems not being able to be drive modded (this would kill the reason I even bought the fucking thing though)
comparing your chipset agains mine... i have on that chip GC2-D1
715Pg202
I am gonna take a pic but i have a shit for shit webcam, and a sister 3 streets away if need be...
if you really would like a shot of the solder job, i can post it, but the picture is pure shite

The solder went from a wire connect to a hard connect, but doesnt work yet.... i feel too dumb seeing as the problems are mine alone atthis point
oh yeah since my edit is disabled... i have the chip over where i can tell if the circuitry is cut from those 3 points...
fuck me first for posting a fifth time in a row, BUT I FOUND MY PROBLEM.... the chip directly above the modding point... it has 3 'legs' that are cut, and have to be reconnected... damned if ill even try that shit...

There ARE points there on that chip, but they're damned small. You could probably pay a bit of cash to get someone to do the job for you though. Look someone up in your area and they'll probably charge you about $30 to do it.
Unless you're VERY good at soldering I'd highly recommend you don't give it a shot.
Other alternative if you're set on modding it is to flog your wii and try and get one at a second hand shop, most in store now will be these ones.

Fuck getting somebody else to do it, grab a Dremel and grind your way towards those contact points... Once exposed, bridge the break with some bits of wire and you're officially a better man than Mr Grinch (who is a hermaphrodite but lets not argue semantics)
