windows explorer error

every once in a while something fucks up my folder browesing....when i open certain folders at these times i get an error and all open windows must close....on this instance it is a video folder containing everything....how can i find and isolate the file and fix it or kill it

also i can bypass the folder by using the folder option and browsing on the left side of the window

I've come across this before, I think it's due to a combination of a fucked codec and the Thumbnail preview "thing" in Explorer. The best thing I could suggest would be to use Emsisoft's Hijackfree to look at what Explorer extensions and Browser Helper Objects (BHOs) you have installed and kill any that any that are video related.

In Hijackfree they're listed under: Others > Explorer AddOns - then check both Shell Extensions and Browser Helper Objects.

... If you're unsure. Open the Shell Extensions and BHOs in HijackFree but then just click "Print List", copy and paste the listing into this thread and either myself or some other boff will go through them looking for the culprit.

thanx for the offer ns....lets see how i do...ive been known to get lucky....

i know i can isolate the folder if i have enough time to switch the view to list before the thumbnail kicks in(or even better ill just bypass it using the folder option)...then i would be able to check each individual folder with a thumbnail view...eventually ill have to come across it

(although, installing FFDShow, telling it to "take over" most file types and telling it NOT to generate thumbnails might also do the trick)

yeah, ns you nailed it, i had this problem when i was running win2000, always would crash for video folders and was due to codec.

thanx NS....im about to go at this finally

i only installed xp media on my last re install of the OS....what codecs should i keep my eye out for to uninstall before i ffdshow?

When this happened to me MicroSoft told me it was due to Dr Watson debugger. I had to manually disable Dr Watson in the registry as follows:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AeDebug]
"Auto"="0"

Do you do lots of encoding? If not, ignore the whole codec issue by using either VLC or GOM player.

i do use vlc....thats why i never knew i had a codec problem....

i wouldnt care otherwise but i need to reencode an avi for the kid....im not up for buying another dvd player....after these players burn out nothing but xvid players....

What are you using to convert them? i don't fuck with Codecs at all, VLC/GOM for playback and VSO ConvertX for shoving them on DVD (not that I do that often, PC is connected to the TV).

convertx2dvd svcd2dvd and dvdsanta all wont open them....maybe its just a fucked rip.....

i never had a problem before either....even vdub wont open them

I would, but I've no idea... I'd err on the side of killing the fuckers and reinstalling the codecs for anything that doesn't work afterwards
