DVD/CD Burner.

Ok so my parents have an HP, and it came stock with a cd drive and cd burner, but I wanted to put my dvd burner into it (since my computer is out of commission). So today I put my burner into their computer unplugging of course their cd burner but also their cd-drive. For the last time I attempted to put my burner in it would not work. It had a exclamation mark or something and wouldn't recognize it (the burner). So with my burner now in there and their cd drive unplugged I turned on the computer and burned a dvd. It took forever (literally), nearly 1/2 an hour. Normally it would take 5-7 minutes. And when I tried to burn a cd (-r) it wouldn't work at all. What could be wrong?

See my answer in the other thread.... unless you can give the pc a thorough scrubbing (not literally!). Or reinstall winders.

sounds like you have a jumper set incorrectly. how many cd/dvd drives did you have in the PC that died?

Is your DVD burner on its on seperate IDE channel or connected to one with a hard drive? If its on its own channel, make sure you set the jumper on the back of the unit to Master. Otherwise if it is connected to a channel with a hard drive, then set it to Slave. Also, go into Device Manager (under Performance and Maintenance, System) and check and see on what channel (Primary or Secondary) the drive's Transfer Mode is set at. If its DMA (Mode 2 for example) then you're fine but if it's set at PIO Only (PIO Mode) then that can be your problem. XP has a tendancy to set this to the much slower PIO transfer mode after a few bad reads or writes, so you want to set it back. See if the option for DMA is available under Transfer Mode and set it to DMA. If not, the best method I have found to fix this and allow you set the drives to DMA is to uninstall the IDE ATA/ATAPI channel its hooked to (either Primary IDE Channel or Secondary IDE Channel) and then restarting your system where it will automatically reinstall the IDE channel. Go back into Device Manager and it should give you the option of DMA if the drive is not already set to that. If had this problem on 3 systems in the pass year, with the DVD burners taking forever to burn, and the above fix has worked every time.

Nope just good ole' experience with building my own systems for the past 15 years. http://thecandyman.awardspace.com you might remember is my LAN Gaming Table project, now has 6 systems all for gaming and internet use, keeping them running is basically a part-time job with no pay. But worth it in every second of enjoyment. And owning a gaming cafe for 5 years, building over 100 custom systems taught me quite a few things as well. Though I know there are people on this board that have forgotten more computer stuff than I know.

But yes if you have an important, must know now, question about candy or chocolate, I'm your man!

i like the pics of the setup... and the 3 page site. simple is often preferred to the "way-too-busy" crap you see everywhere else. 15 yrs in the biz means you prolly know more than i do (ive only got 13) and building all those custom systems means you prolly know more about PCs than most who post.

im only kissing your ass to swing a spot at the LAN table...
