Have you tried uninstalling then reinstalling the browsers?

For uninstall procedures I use Revo Uninstaller. Very useful tool.

Try that, then reinstall them.

If that doesn't work, are you maybe using a proxy or TOR or something? That can certainly slow down browsing speeds.

Oh and use Mozbackup to save your complete profile before uninstalling Firefox. I think the same people behind that do backup software for Opera and IE etc.

Other than that, if everything else is working fine and downloading and uploading at normal speeds, maybe contact your ISP to ask them if they are experiencing problems with HTTP etc.

Hiya Tittiebiscuits!

1. Reboot/cold start any cable modems and routers you have.
2. Check your ISPs service page... Are they having problems in your area?
3. Try a Speedtest site, like the one on ZDNet.
4. If all else fails, grab HijackFree, select Ports, "Print This", right-click (select all), copy... Paste in here. Do the same with the Autorun section so that I/we can check your PC for dog shit

Leave a headless PC at a bro-in-laws house that has higher speed!

Scan your PC with these as well:

You should still do what NS's says and/or a log with either HijackThis or NS's HijackFree. There's bound to be more of the critters.

I use Avira. It is nice. And free.

the #1 cause of slow browsing is spyware, thats true. we all know that cleaning spyware out of a PC can be like cleaning piss out of a swimming pool. the most common spyware will do 1 of 2 things:

1. add an obtrusive route to your routing table. you can verify this by checking your routing table manually. at the command prompt, type in "route print" and see how many hops you have. a standard connection with no router will have 6. add a router and you've got 7. any more means that every packet you send will be routed to an unknown destination before reaching your target. this is how most ppl steal your personal information, god knows it worked for me in the past. if this is the case, you will need to delete the route manually by entering "route delete (destination) (gateway)". this link will explain everything: http://uw713doc.sco.com/en/man/html...oute.1Mtcp.html

2. corrupt your winsocks. winsocks determine how data is transfered from the browser to the routing table and also "listen" for HTML data being sent to the PC. the easy fix is to open the command prompt and type in "netsh winsock reset catalog" and press enter. this only works if you're using SP2 (but who isn't) and you'll have to reboot after.

if that doesn't clear it up, you may have to perform several tasks to repair the winsocks. here's the best reference i could find on the subject: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811259

the only real concern here is that the prog corrupting your shit will show it's ugly little head again. avast will clear that up. registration is free for a year and it'll also clean out your restore points (i love to bury mine in there).

"netsh winsock reset catalog"

does anyone else concur?....and what are the drawbacks of doing this?...any?....ill give it a shot if no one disagrees....i still think its alittle slow for a 1.5 mb connection

yeah, just ignore me. i have no idea what i'm talking about. i never write scripts that bury worms in restore points. i have no idea what winsocks are or why they are so important. i made it all up. sorry for wasting your time.

avira does remove rootkits, but its also german software. why is that important? well, its based on an engine called AntiVir that was created in 1988 (which most AV software was based off of as well) and uses search algorithms that to this day (started in May 2007) show false positives when scanning. Its reputation was restored when they corrected the majority of issues, but still is not considered as powerful as AVG, which you have already tried.

in short, avira is a poor, weak pathetic version of AVG.

now, there are 3 reasons i suggested avast. #1 it searches restore points. #2 it performs a system-wide scan after first install with no OS loaded. #3 it creates it's own database using information collected from your PC (meaning it's a personalized AV).

but hey, what do i know...

ps - on the top ten list of most effective AV progs, those three aren't anywhere near #1. (AVG was #1 just in case you're wondering)

I stand by what I said. Avira, NOD or Kaspersky.

I choose Avira as the best 100% free anti-virus. The other two are the best paid-for I believe.

I never questioned your knowledge, merely offered an opinionated alternative.

Oh and Avira is German, therefor it's efficient and gets the job done.
