My way of making XviD from DVDs... am I doing this right?

Ok, here's what I do to make an XviD rip from a DVD. I don't use automated programs like AutoGknot or whatever, it's all handwork. I just don't know if it's good practice.

Repeat these steps for each VOB:

- Load VOB in VirtualDubMod
- Smart deinterlace filter
- Resize (and maybe crop if there's black borders)
- Render as Huffy AVI (as-good-as-lossless compression)

Then:

- Load first AVI version of VOB in VirtualDubMod
- Append rest of AVIs
- Convert audio to LAME 192 MP3
- Set up XviD first and second pass
- Do first pass...
- Do second pass...
- Ready!

I get really good XviD's this way. But I see so many people using other shit... AviSynth, recoders, encoders, retimers, converters, etc. etc. etc.

Am I missing something or am I doing it right?

Common way to do it right is here:

Your way of encoding seems a bit strange and harddisk space-consuming (huffy).
But hey..if it works for ya! Never change a winning team.

HDD space is no issue for me... Each 1 GB VOB becomes a 3 to 4 GB AVI with the huffy codec, so that's not a real big problem.

The way I see it, my method gives me a perfect, deinterlaced, resized movie with great audio that's fully in sync. I just don't understand the many extra steps people take, like splitting and joining audio and video...

But I guess you're right, if it works, it works!

Few comments:

You could set up DVD Decrypter to rip to one big VOB, instead of multiple files, which would make your workflow easier.

VDubMod is rather outdated; also, I've seen some DVD VOBs it can't parse properly giving glitches which could throw audio out of sync. Better to use VirtualDub-MPEG2 or VirtualDub 1.7.x with MPEG-2 decoder plugin or AviSynth script.

Not required for the majority of rips (anything from film is already progressive).

Huffyuv is lossless, but you could also use Lagarith to avoid having to convert YV12 to YUY2 or RGB. But if you rip to one big VOB, there is no need for saving out separate AVIs anyway.

You could keep the AC3.

Mother, thanks for sharing your insight, it's really appreciated.

I wasn't aware VirtualDubMod was outdated, I haven't had any problems yet. But the single VOB approach with those other VirtualDub-versions sounds like a big improvement: less chance for glitches, no need for Huffy conversion first, and an easier and quicker work flow.

Thanks again, this was just the expert advice I was looking for!

I must be lazy, I pick my quality percentage at 100% and direct AC3 audio on AutoGK, I love the results, and the size isn't bad.

i was thinking AutoGK myself.
the program uses VirtualDub,AviSynth, ac3, maybe mp3 don't remember. even VOB sub.

you can do xvid or divx and it does all the work for ya. load the INFO file and it loads all the VOBs.

you can set the outcome size , to many different sizes,
as it says it's all done for ya in auto.

norm is to come out great.
