network monitoring

i'm in charge of purchasing some network monitoring software and am clueless as to which one to choose. we have a good sized subnet (well, 2 of them), but not like huge or anything. any suggestions?


edit:: i really want something that will set off an audio alarm if communication is lost to any ip of my choosing and the ability to set off multiple alarms should multiple ips go down. checked out orion and lanadministrator, but i think those are overkill.

well it looks great in theory. i told it to run a net send batch when an ip on my network went down and it did just that. looked perfect until i tried to shut it down. i get some weird message in german and it refuses to close. guess the search continues...

thanks tho NS. that software is superbad.

Remove the tick from "save logfile" and it works a treat... 0/10 for you on not even attempting to work out the error message

same issue after removing the tick. no support information on this error, so i hearby invalidate your scoring system and reject any and all ratings obtained heretofor.


edit:: i had a service running that apparently caused the issue. disabled it and that software works like a charm. thanks again.

so now the company i work for wants to purchase network monitoring software and money isn't an issue. any ideas for something that will be just as awesome but possibly include more functionality?

seriously tho, if anyone has actually used some good monitoring software that can record massive amounts of data and send alerts (was gonna use Visio to do it, but we don't have a license for pro) and possibly other functions i haven't thought of that would help, feel free to comment.
