Charlie Wilson's War

***Very Minor Spoilers***

Weird to see Hanks in something that has T'n'A and isn't so long that you need a blow up cushion to stop your own arse going numb. And the (lack of) length shows...it feels superficial and rushed, like it's missing its heart. You can feel the blood, see the blood - metaphorically, not literally - but the characters are never fully developed and you don't really ever get why a playboy like Wilson feels so connected and how he's so moved and motivated to do something. Alternatively, even a cynical approach, like he did it all to screw the 6th wealthiest woman in Texas and get funding to continue his election drives, would've been sufficient. But at a little over 90 minutes - probably less if you remove the (nowadays) unending credits - you never really get to reconcile the womanising playboy with one of the most effective movers and shakers behind American foreign policy in recent times.

But for all that it's an excellent little movie. The dialogue...man, I could rave about it for 10 pages. It's fucking AWESOME! This Sorkin guy that did the screenplay, don't know anything about him, but I get visions of the blind assassin musicians in Kung Fu Hustle, unleashing swords with the pluck of a string...that's what this guy does with his wordprocessor. It's sharp, it's quick, it's witty, it's to the point, it holds together what would otherwise be too few scenes in a rushed TV movie.

And Philip Seymour Hoffman. Best Supporting Actor Oscar. Do not doubt me. In an already illustrious career he outdoes everything that has gone before with a character that has more presence but is less pretentious than virtually anything you've seen on screen from a Yankistani actor. He is class!

8.32987678 out of 10 (it lost 0.2416333 recurring for being too short)

I liked it.

As you can see, I said Seymour Hoffman should win best supporting actor already and I said it last year. You are so behind the times. (all one day of it)

It did end a little abrubtly, the summary of yearly russian losses flashed by and could have been filled out a bit. I suppose they could have given more information on the rise of Charlie Wilson himself but as its a true story, that information will no doubt be available elsewhere.

Good movie.

Philip Seymour Hoffman's character was great. I thought Tom Hanks pulled off the slimy politician roll well and he made Hoffman look that much more amusingly blunt.

Thank god hoffman broke out of that weird closet queer typecast from boogie nights.

From skimming and now about 40 minutes in. Great release. Noticed nothing amiss. With that cast and story line powerful looking movie indeed.

9/9/?

No disappoints. Movie 8.5

One of the best of 2007. Hoffman is in a class of his own.

I put this on for me and my family and we were bored bored bored. It's dialogue heavy with a lot of it very political. Not my cup of tea.

Yep, it's not a mindless action flick, nor is it for children.
