@ handheld gaming & emulation fans - pandora!

anyone heard about this? already got it on your list of 'things to buy'?

pandora is a handheld device, just bigger than a nintendo ds. it sports an OMAP3430 processor and 128 meg of ddr ram. itll run some sort of linux distro and the developers promise itll be capable of emulating everything up to and including the ps1. its very possible that itll emulate n64, and possible (tho quite a slim chance) of emulating sega saturn too.

for me the highlights are:

keyboard
dual sd card slots
wifi
analog & digital controls
800x480 touchscreen

this render is done by someone from the gp2x forums.

it looks kinda ugly but who cares, really.

ive always toyed with the idea of buying a laptop, only for internet and old games. but i couldnt justify the cost and the size of the damn thing... for £200 iam definitely buying one of these, roll on april!

full spec here: http://pandora.bluwiki.com/

what do ya reckon?

Now that's bad ass. That's a small laptop, A bit Pricey but for what you get it's not that bad.

That's what happens if you let a Nintendo DS fuck an Etcha Sketch

Thanks for that. The first time i've actually laughed out loud. I have a cold though and now have phlegm on my screen but never mind.

gona bump this thread, since the device is almost finished.

everything is finalised now, devs are putting the finishing touches to the GUI and the last of the hardware is being checked for bugs before the pre-order starts on the 30th.

after which, 3000 units will be put into production and will ship late november.

a reminder of the specs for those who are interested:

* ARM Cortex-A8 600Mhz+ CPU running Linux
* 430-MHz TMS320C64x+ DSP Core
* PowerVR SGX OpenGL 2.0 ES compliant 3D hardware
* 800x480 4.3inch 16.7 million colours touchscreen LCD
* Wifi 802.11b/g, Bluetooth & High Speed USB 2.0 Host
* Dual SDHC card slots & SVideo TV output
* Dual Analogue and Digital gaming controls
* 43 button QWERTY and numeric keypad
* Around 10+ Hours battery life
* GUI: gMenu, various X based desktops, Ubuntu etc. or make your own.

personally i cant wait to use some proper music apps on this thing... trackers are all well and good but id rather one of the many fl studio clones. sitting on the train to london with a decent pair of headphones making beats sounds like a dream to me. downloading torrents on the move will be awesome as well as using firefox and GPS. it might even replace my mp3 player as the potential storage is bigger and the sound quality will be far superior than most with its burr brown dac. there are loads of ps1 games id like to play too, having missed the console first time round. we can expect full framerate on all ps1 iso's which is great.

2 things to add for those not familiar with the device:

its not supposed to rival sony or nintendo - its target audience is different.
the first run is only 3000 because thats all they could afford. the second batch will be in 2009 and will be paid for by the money from the first batch.

official site here

whadda ya reckon?

The black certainly looks better than the red but for 200 beans, cant you pick up a refurb laptop online and emulate pretty much everything that can?

yeah but laptops arent really portable are they, not without a bag anyway. this thing is the size of a nintendo ds lite. and im willing to bet, with the kind of devs on board, that most emulators will run more smoothly on this than they would on a £200 laptop too.

I've been going back and forth between buying this, an eee pc (901 probably if any of them) or a beagleboard for some time now. Any will end up being fun projects
