Issues with VBR?

I've been doing dvdrips of tv shows, and have been using cbr for the audio. I remember reading that if I ever want to chop pieces of the shows, and used vbr, I'd have a hard time keeping audio in sync. Is this still valid? Or is there no reason why I should be using cbr anymore?

VirtualDub does not support VBR MP3, and may cause audio desync, but there are several other programs you can use for splitting that will give you no problems.

VBR audio gives you a little bit of extra audio quality at the same bitrate - which is why scene rules state no CBR audio.
