I am a Noob: Question about H.264 DivX

I have a question regarding some H.264 DvdRips I see in some places...

1. How much superior is a H.264 DvdRip in comparison to a *simple* DvdRip?
2. Is it worth downloading ... I mean encoding a DVD using This compression method?

Have a read through this thread to see if it helps.

1. Varies - at lower bitrates (smaller files, i.e. single CD rips) the difference is more noticeable, and x264 will clearly be superior to Xvid/DivX. For 2CD rips the difference may not be as obvious.

2. Depends what you want. Xvid-encoded video in the AVI container will play back on most MPEG-4 compatible standalones these days, whereas x264 is only playable on your computer. So what you gain in quality you lose in flexibilty.

Thank you both for your answers. The link was indeed very helpful.
