Ah, so you're wanting to rip them without losing any audio quality? Rip them to FLAC... It's the easiest, open source, non-drm lossless doodad: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_Lossless_Audio_Codec

thanx ns....i guess im gonna have to keep large file sizes due to the original burn huh....its sorta like converting a telesync to hi def though isnt it

if i was to rerip the cassettes direct to a computer....would i still use flac?...or could i lower the file sizes a little

also...is flac a much smaller file size than cda?....it wouldnt make sense to convert if the file sizes are roughly the same

I'd expect FLAC to be significantly smaller than simply using cda but the main reason I recommended it is because I know it's "lossless" (in the sense that you don't lose any audio, unlike MP3 for example), it's free and seems to be the preferred choice for audiophiles and I was assuming you were wanting to preserve the studio/master quality of the audio... If you're not going to be remastering from the files you rip or anything important like that, I'd just rip the bastards to MP3 at a decent bitrate

I think that's what he wanted to know. The best format and bitrate giving a good balance of sound quality and disk space given that the source was originally a cassette.

yes guys.....

so after the initial burn on the standalone.....mp3 @ 320 will be ok?

when you initially ripped the tapes, did you rip them as wav?

i only ask because if, for example, you ripped them as 192kbps mp3 before you burned as audio cd then it would be pointless to re-rip them at anything higher than 192kbps mp3.

if you initially burned using wavs as source, then i would advise encoding to mp3 with the LAME encoder. most popular preset for this is V0 which is VBR and gives bitrates around the 230 - 260 kbps range. its a good trade off between file size and quality. you wont be able to hear the difference between this and 320kbps with the same encoder.

but whatever you choose, make sure to use LAME to encode. all others are inferior, especially itunes encoder called 'xing' which is absolutely shite.

Sorry for any confusion then ZL, the way you described it earlier I thought you were wanting to do more than simply keep a copy for yourself.

Posted by ZootedLooter on 07-31-2008 12:09 AM:

no....i did need to do some work on it....but im fucked.....i cant find the fuckin cd....now all i have left is some shit musicmatch encode that i ran at variable bitrate last year.....fuck.....this shit better turn up

and the original rip came from a standalone burner that put em in as a .cda file....i dont think its the same as a wav

For those of you following at home:

ZL's friend has an audio cassette tape.

ZL wanted a copy, so his friend used a standalone CD recorder to record the music as an audio disc onto CD-R .

(I know that some standalone recorders set some sort of copyright bit on the recording, but I think this only affects you if you try to make another digital copy to DAT or minidisc. It should still rip to a computer fine.)

ZL put the disc in his drive and was confused when Windows reported that the disc contained CDA files.

(These are not actually audio files, it's just Windows' method of showing the tracks on any standard audio CD.)

ZL posted on vcdq.com and confused everyone else.

ZL has now lost the CD.

Mother still can't see WTF any of this has to do with Euripides.
