Yeah, I'm sure I could spend ages fucking about in Google but it's a simple, short question:

Can either the 360 or PS3 play *all* of the usual movie formats across a standard network. I don't want any transcoding dogshit, I just want to setup a network share and point a console at it...

as far as i know the ps3 is the best choice

i would much rather use my old xbox than the xbox 360 i have for movies even though it doesn't play the hd stuff

I can't speak for the PS3, I've heard the PS3 is a fantastic BR player, and can play most formats now.

I was able to stream an .mkv with my Shitbox 360, it did buffer quite a bit so that kind of blew and for that reason I'd say it can't do HD at all. Plays Xvid and Mpegs just fine.

I think the .mkv does the transcoding on the pc.

From what Para has said, the Eggbox cannot play over a network without added woe?

(in case you're wondering, I'm due a new console and I'd like it to be able to blast HD over the network with minimum PC overhead)

also note 360 wont stream divx via media centre FFS

and mkv is only on the fly transcode

That's a 360 off the menu then... Can a PS3 do this shit or am I building a media PC instead and sticking with the Wii for gaming?

My Wii is modded up the whazoo so I wouldn't need to transcode, I'd just wait for MPlayer, Geexbox or similar to support network shares... But it'll almost certainly never support HD content, which is what I'm after.

It does support wmv, but for some reason It wouldn't support the sound when I tried it. That was also a while ago.

As far as Blu Ray goes, It's still one of the BEST players on the market from what I understand. So when you think about it, you're paying $200 for a BR player, and $200 for a game system and it is very affordable if you think about it that way.

Gimp the only exclusive titles that really are worth a damn are Metal Gear, and God of War. There maybe one or two more but can't think of em. Looking at there line up, It's not the greatest, lol. Well you can finally play Bioshock, lol.

it has blu ray and the games can only get better now.

you can use mkv2vob to convert mkv files so they play on ps3 but then again this would also play on the 360.
