HDRip formats - pros and cons

Five years ago scene DVDRips could be found in both SVCD and DivX (Xvid) formats. At the time we had great fun in arguing the merits of each format.

So now Blu-ray has beaten HD DVD in the HD format war. But there are still several HDRip formats floating around. I'm going to start collecting a few more of these, so I thought it would be useful to discuss the different formats:

H264 (x264) in MKV
- movie only
- burned as data (DVD5 or DVD9, depending on size)
- most popular format for scene rips
- can only be played on a good PC (maybe PS3 if you remux the file?)

H264 on AVCHD or BD5/BD9 disc
- usually an ISO that you burn to a DVD9
- not seen any scene releases, although some x264 releases include a batch file to remux into this format
- playable on PS3 and some blu-ray players (and Windows if you update the UDF drivers)

VC1 in WMV (WMV HD)
- movie only
- burned as data (DVD5 or DVD9)
- a few scene groups release in this format
- playable on Windows or Xbox 360

So... what's your preferred format? Aside from burning to a physical disc, what other methods are people using for playback (network streaming, etc.)?

Re: HDRip formats - pros and cons

This thread should be stickied.

I didn't know about those other formats. I only get the mkv files. I have my pc hooked up to the tv using the DVI connection.

I just wanna know the difference between an MKV and an actual BR movie, I haven't compared the two.

How can you back up those MKV files over 7.4 gbs? Some 1080p movies go up to 10 gbs. Can't back em up on a DL-DVDR can ya. I just wish I knew a way to back those up.

Posted by Mother on 09-24-2008 09:49 AM:

Yes you can - just use the UDF filesystem instead of ISO 9660. You can then burn files up to the maximum capacity of a DVD9.

Edit: I only know this because ImgBurn told me when I tried burning an 8GB MKV to disc.

Question thou, pretaining to this. ive yet to try it out sicne i dont known a ps3 but a friend of mine does. can a normal dvd drive read BR disc's or is it propriatary to sony. also related to this, i know a BR disc can hold up to... 20g i think it is. so what normal size of the movie if only the movie stream is ripped. 8-10gs? can i DL a BR rip and burn it to a 4.7g dvd or a dual layer dvd and it still retain its HD quality? just some thoughts that have been floating around for a while than i saw this thread.

Ok treat me like a Noob, I know nothing. I know less than nothing. We'll go with that.

So if you download the latest UDF driver, Do you need special software to burn the data? and will it be able to be read on any pc/mac? Is there an option in Nero or DeepBurner or whatever burning software you use to?

Is there a way to split 10gb .MKV files?

What are the limitations of each file format?

No, it's not retaining the HD quality, you're actually losing a lot of information. Notice the pixels in the HD rips? That's why. a full HD rip would be 15-20gb's.

No a normal DVD drive can't play BR.

You can burn any file to disk as long as it fits, Just copy it as data. That's what most of us do with .MKV files.

knowing nothing about hd and its formats, I got hold of the latest Indy Jones movie in 720p mkv format.

I then remuxed the file through tsMuxer and within a few minutes had a .m2ts and .meta file, fired up tversity and streamed it through to the PS3. Played flawlessly and I was impressed to say the least.

the same software can also be used to create AVCHD disks I believe.

Apparently problems arise with releases with DTS audio.

Ok spent 24 hrs downloading H264 (x264) in MKV

Films tested are

Die.Hard.1988.720p.BluRay.x264-SiNNERS
The.Goonies.1985.720p.BluRay.x264-SiNNERS
Batman.1989.720p.BluRay.x264-SiNNERS
The.Terminator.1984.1080p.BluRay.x264-hV
Terminator.2.Judgement.Day.Directors.Cut.1991.1080p.SHDDVD.DT.x264-hV
Point.Break.1991.1080p.BluRay.x264-SECTOR7

A couple of others are forthcoming but i do like the quality of these films and yeh they are old but classics only thing i miss are the menus and the extras, the sound are well as u expect amazing pic is spot on even the long films.
Lets hope the new year pushes us closer to retails so we can begin collecting yet again and raping the bandwidth lol

P.S i got 16mb down and 1.2mb up
Also using win media 11 and cccp codec on hdmi tv

Intriguing file extension, .TS is transportStream and tends to be used when putting out a HDTV capture (not encoded) onto the nets.

PS3 is an OK intermediate for HD playback, but there's very much a reason I sold mine and replaced it with a C2D HTPC with a BDROM on it. MKV(x264) tends to be my format of choice.. obviously I still buy originals but the bloody regional encoding is going to bite me on the ass soon as I have a mix of A and B discs. I'll look into flashing my Pioneer to avoid headaches.

And yes, the bitrate for some films is absolutely through the roof (25mbit and higher) so the raw video files on these discs can easily hit 25-30gb if they have DTS MA or uncompressed PCM soundtracks. I haven't A/Bd a 720p MKV to a 1080p BD yet, it'll be interesting to see the results.

Point break is amazing on 1080p, currently on a break from watching it now.
Die hard on 720p was great, sound was like being in the cinema, the explosion on the building when he dumps the monitor loaded with c-4 down the elevator shaft was great and the ending when Karl comes out and goes to kill Mc clane and gets shot by that copper those are 2 of the scenes that stick out and both action scenes

Gonna watch commando 720p next and think it be time for some sleep after a quick munch on left overs

The 1's i have listed above will be the first i start hunting to buy originals of, i don't mind paying for quality i just don't want crap or a special edition to followed by a directors cut etc....

Be interesting to see if they remaster some of the better films or will they just shove it to a higher bitrate to get the size up.
Pho what BD Rom's are currently good and can be region hacked? pioneer is usually a good bet

What software are you guys using for your HTPC? I would like to build one in the next few months.

I'm sure you guys aren't using Windows media center software, lol.

Posted by pHo on 12-28-2008 06:27 PM:

When I fancy being all media centery I use MediaPortal. When I just want to use a media player, I use KMPlayer which is the best player on any platform IMHO. (And works within Media Portal too which is nice).

As a rule i just use win media with the cccp codec, but i have a couple of films here with dual audio 1 being independence day and the other is 5th element remastered, but media picks primary audio which is Spanish,(cant find how to change audio on it) so tried Vlc which is ok but can cause pixel probs whereas media is perfect, downloading KMplayer to test now and see if i can switch the audio

If that fails i'm gonna rip the Spanish out of the mkv file, i just hope it jumps onto English DTS (id4 is 15 gig lol)
