Oscar-winning film legend Paul Newman has died of cancer at the age of 83.
The blue-eyed star of movies like Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid died in his Connecticut home on Friday, surrounded by family and close friends.
A statement from Newman's family said: "His death was as private and discreet as the way he had lived his life."
His Butch Cassidy co-star Robert Redford paid tribute, saying: "There is a point where feelings go beyond words... I have lost a real friend."
The star's five daughters praised their father's "selfless humility and generosity" in a statement released to the press.
"Paul Newman played many unforgettable roles," they said.
"But the ones for which he was proudest never had top billing on the marquee: Devoted husband, loving father, adoring grandfather, dedicated philanthropist."
In Los Angeles, flowers were to be placed on Newman's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame as the Motion Picture Association of America hailed his "extraordinary career."
What a legend made alot of amazing film and and all round good guy, gave alot of cash to charity over the years. From what I read he was the type of guy you could walk up to and have a chat with the fame never went to his head.
RIP
We all have to die sometime.

One of the Greatest actors of all days. Butch Cassidy, The Sting, Towering Inferno, some great flicks and all made before I was born.
In an interview he said after making The Hustler everyone wanted to play him in a game of pool. No one would take no for an answer so he came up with the idea he play but only one game and winner takes the other persons house no one asked for a game after that.
Cool hand Luke

Well let me just buck the trend here...
No doubt a great guy. A decent actor, acted in some decent movies. But for a 50yr career and his standing in Hollywood he's made relatively few truly great movies.
Butch/Sting/Luke/Hud/Hustler/Perdition are arguably his 'great' movies and in at least 3 of those he wasn't the lead, he wasn't the main attraction, his wasn't the defining role. And the lead in Peridition, Hanks, has more 'great' titles to his credit in a career 30yrs shorter.
Don't get me wrong, I really do like Newman, there are loads of other movies like Hombre/Verdict/Inferno that are good movies he's played/starred in that I own and enjoy. There are certain actors (Cary Grant, David Niven, Peter Sellars, Alec Guinness, Terry Thomas, Sidney Poitier, Toshiro Mifune, Jack Lemmon, Song Kang-ho, James Stewart, Tadanobu Asano, quite a few others) that make me just pay attention because they're on the screen whether I know anything about the movie or not, and Newman is one of those. But he's more like a top class journeyman footballer - who is regularly decent and has a couple of cracking games every season without ever being a break-the-bank transfer, a Lee Carsley or Gavin McCann - than a Torres or Drogba that you'd gnaw your own fingers off to generate sufficient liquid for them to sign on the dotted line.
