help me out guys

Its about time i upgraded my shit,
I wont bore you (or embarras) myself and list my current setup.

but its almost christmas and if there's one thing on my list its a decent main pc.

BUT

im not looking for the all round killer games machine.
its mainly for fast raring and unraring and fast avi to dvd converting.

im looking to build it myself from parts so heres what im hunting for

A fast mobo with mostly sata
im currently running all IDE but as sata is faster i hear, i wanna convert.

A Fast CPU, and fast memory

A nice case with 4 bays on the front.

Sound and grafix arnt important so they could even be on board the mobo.

what i need help with is hunting this shit down
Ive never got this shit online before and don't really know whats out there, i been out the game for too long.

help a bro out

Moving thread to correct part of the forum (again).

I'd also be interested in hearing what people recommend as I'm due for an upgrade soon. My last one was a pre-built pile of shit from HP because it was an employee discount offer. I can't even remember the last time I built my own PC - it was at least 7 years ago.

Yes, an interesting thread that i would also like to know what others think.

Checking of PAR's / SFV's and fast unpacking of rars is something i want.

At the moment my computer is quite fast.

I got a Q6600, 4GB of ram and SATAII.

I'm on x64 Vista so i use 7zip which is really good.

I mainly donwload to one hard drive, the extract to another, so i get 60Mb/s sometimes it can go up to 100Mb/s.

I think you need fast hard drives, and mutiple ones so you can extract to others as thats the fastest way.

I expect a raid of Raptors would be lot faster and the biggest single advantage to a system.

Lets see what others think.

I too have suffered the folly of the employee discount offer

I've just picked up a new set up which includes;

Intel775 Core 2 MB 2000 FSB
750GB HD
4GB DDR2 800MHZ Corsair XMS RAM
Blu-Ray/DVD Writer
7.1 Onboard Sound
9800GTX 512 MB NVIDIA GEForce
GB Broadband Ethernet Port
and Q9550 Quad Core

£669

I looked online and priced everything up and couldn't build it cheaper myself.

The only thing it didn't come with was an O/S.

Any good?

seems i struck a nerve with this request..

prehaps between us we can get to the bottom of this.
so am i right in thinking a quad core would be over kill for what i need (pluss lost of $£$£$£) ?

what would be the slow link in the chain
the CPU, the HD's the memory or the mobo?
i wanna realy avoid bottlenecks.

i would hate to spend good money just to have say.. the mobo be the weak link.

i should point out that i would be running xp pro.

or would that be the weak link, should i be looking to go for xp 64bit?

the quadcore is awesome Arthur,I went from converting a movie in convertxtodvd in a hour at highest settings,to doing the same in 11 minutes, now I just use the thumb drive, but it shows how much faster the quad is
