Mac OSX newsreader recommendation

I've just found out I can use newsgroups! I tried before but for some reason my isp would only let me download at about 30k/sec. At least I thought that it was my isp doing it. Now I've found a new program and fuck me do I love newsgroups.

I know I know, welcome to the 1800's, but... I hope to be useful to some people. I found a free newsreader that uses a browser interface and decodes, unrars and deletes uneeded files automatically.

It's called SABnzbd+ and it's available on sourceforge. Although I don't have any experience with binary newsreaders (except "grabbit"?) I can't imagine what else you would need out of one. Well maybe the ability to watch files as they download along the lines of NZBPlayer for windows which is a natty little app which I tried for the first time the other day too.

Usenet is win

I believe as long as you grab the files in order the first rar set you can start playing with something like mplayer or vlc and rig your own nzbplayer type experience, wouldn't really recommend it that way though just wait for it to finish ;p

As long as you can download/browse headders, have decent speed/retention and can do yenc and uuencode decoding of the files (also grab par2 to be able to repair broken archives) then you'll have a very pleasant experience with usenet, sounds like SABnzbd+ is decent for that. I would also recommend pan newsreader, for the linux and windows crowd, don't bother cracking software like newsbin pro, it's just as good and it's open source freeware ya pirates!

if you're not above paying for it, giganews is downright amazing, I tap my line speed downloading from their servers at over 3 megabytes/s and their retention just can't be beat, much better then say buying a seedbox or something if you're a torrent whore, usually cheaper too. It's too bad I'm poor at the moment and had to put my subscription on hold.

Erm.... shit. Its actually not a newsreader at all. It only downloads nzb's. So you can't browse headers etc. But if you're nothing more than a lazy, know next to nothing leech then my recommendation still stands.

SAB is a great piece of software, and there's tons of extensions that work with it. Couldn't advise another reader above it.

edit: Thread title is misleading, as you can compile SAB to run on pretty much anything. Maybe even a toaster.

Never heard of this and still using Unison / MacPAR Deluxe here.

Gonna give this a go straight away.

Indeed! I run SAB on every OS platform we have in the house. XP, Vista, and OSX. I haven't tried our toaster yet, but damn that would make pulling binaries easier.
