I don't know about the number of servers in each of those locations but typically you'd just pick the closest one to you so whichever one you ping returns the lowest response. The third will be if you have ordered the SSL service.

That said, sometimes my European GigaNews server is slower than the US server so I end up switching it around.

Just try the first two (or third if you've ordered SSL) and see which one you get the fastest speeds from and then set that as the primary and the other as the backup.

cheers, I will do that and see what happens, I just dumped giga for the 11 buck no limit plan but so far the speed sux

ssl is auto, does that account for anything?

Are you sure you didn't order the €10 unlimited plan which is restricted to 1 Mbit/s? Cos I don't see any mention of a €11 a month plan on the website.

Oh I see sorry. I followed the link you gave me. €11 a month unlimited is a good deal.

But I still don't see it mentioned on the homepage.....I'm looking at the right hand side! I must be blind.

I just checked the link and it's there, it might be some anti-virus software your running?

But yeah, $11 is a good deal, particularly as they secure the price.

I'm sticking with my current provider though, as although they are a little more expensive ($14.99) I've never had a problem and they've just increased the retention to 200 days.

Yoshy, Vamps is right... Open up a command prompt and "ping <servername>" and do all three servers and pick the quickest*

*Apologies if you know how to ping, too much info is better than not enough

Normally I wouldn't bother but this is bugging me. I've tried it in both Firefox and IE and can't see a link to a special offer....this is all I can see:

You haven't clicked on the link danimal provided. That is the main page you're on.

Ah, i misread dutchs post, he says he can't see the link to that special offer on the main page.

Can't see it myself. Where the "Special Offer" should be it's "Corporate/isp Solutions"

Yes, I can see the offer in your both of your links...but how did you get to them from the HOME PAGE, can't see any links to them on it

http://www.news.astraweb.com/

Try and navigate to the special offer from the home page.

Hmm ,seems there is nothing about it on the home page. not sure why

Posted by yoshy on 01-12-2009 10:54 PM:

good morning all

Problem solved. thanx for the input

I am using the secure one but I had the wrong port , so I changed the port and presto

I have to say, the speed is constant compared to giga and a bit faster too.

Yeah the 11 buck deal isnt advertised on the homepage, not sure why but I got the link from another*site and thought it was too good too be true.

Its locked and the retention is up to 180 and climbing every day.

That offer isnt forever so jump on if its cheaper.

*Cheers NS

I used to use giganews myself but changed to hitnews

http://www.hitnews.eu/index_en.php?group=2

was going to go wih astraweb but for me hitnews is cheaper

hitnews is only available in the Netherlands and Uk but with the speed i get and the cost difference I save a further £2 a month.
Not much but I am happy with hitnews.

I also found a speed increase when I went to hitnews.

giganews used to be 325KB/s
hitnews is 410KB/s

average

hitnews is also 200 days retention and will probably climb like the rest of them

Its funny you should mention them as I just found out about them today. I've googled and found out that they no longer allow internation customers however....but you could join? I'm in Ireland and am wondering if they'll let me through...

I can't see where on the site it says that but there is a lot of talk on google about hitnews not supplying outside the Netherlands.

anyway you could always try it as they offer a free trial

I've been using it for a few months now and it's been fantastic.
