i keep getting an 'error downloading codec' when i...
Hello VCD friends and professionals,
Im getting very frustrated.
when i right click on a movie to play it.
I choose windows media player.
As the movie begins to play..
WMP says at the bottom that its connecting and sending a request for codec.
then it says 'error downloading codec' and the movie plays but with no volume.
This is fine because i will sometimes just watch the file with another program like nero showtime..
but when i use nero to put the movie on to a disc to watch on my real TV.
there is no volume even though theres volume when i test it during the setup to burn it onto disc.
Can someone please help me understand how to fix this codec problem.
thank you in advance,
What movie?
You're probably missing an AC3 decoder, but without further information I can't be sure.

Gotta agree with Mother, sounds more like an AC3 audio problem than anything else but without the EXACT release name we can't be sure. Install FFDShow on your PC for Windows playback or use something that doesn't rely on codecs such as GOMPlayer or VideoLan(VLC) and when converting to DVD you might want to try ConvertXtoDVD instead of Nero (which is generally a bloated wankbag).
Also, I think you can determine what codecs a file wants using GSpot if you continue having problems or don't want to use GOM/VLC.
I use windows XP.
I usually watch my movies on my PC.
my movie files are in 'my videos'
so i play them using Windows media player and i use WMP 10.
If and when i want to watch a movie on my TV i will put it onto disc using my Purchased copy of Nero 8 ultra edition.
when i get a new movie...
for example i got..
W.DVDRip.XviD-NeDiVx
Its a 1.4 gb film so it has 2 files.
i extract it in each folder.
then before i 'move file' disc 1 to 'my videos' i always to check if the movie will play.
this is when i get the 'error downloading codec' problem from WMP and it only plays the Video and theres no audio.
if i use Nero showtime to play a movie, it will play the audio and video. (sometimes).
then. during the small test phase of the burning process it will play the audio and video but when i take the actual disc and put it back into the DVDrom and use WMP it still wont play the audio.
trying to be specific as possible..
while i do learn fast.
you guys are a lot smarter than i am with this.
please forgive me..
but how would i fix an AC3 audio problem
and/or how would i uninstall the codecs..?
i will try to get VideoLAN or GOMplayer
and i will look for convertXtoDvD
i would love to learn how to use better software than WMP and Nero.
thank you again for helping me.
I think you have two issues here but apologies if I'm barking up the wrong tree:
1. You don't have an xvid codec installed and WMP is trying it's best to play it but it's crap. Nero Showtime has it's own codecs (probably) but it's probably crap anyway GOM Player and VLC (VideoLan) are both free so check these links out:
GOM Player
VLC
2. I don't think you're converting the xvid file into a video DVD, I think you're just burning the xvid file to a PC data DVD, which is why WMP behaves the same (it's the same file). I think some versions of Nero can convert xvid to a video DVD but ConvertXtoDVD is probably the best "easy" conversion program... You'll probably find it in a similar place to where you're getting your movies
thank you very much.
didnt know which direction to go and
youve led me down the right path.
Ill try all this tonight and post my outcome.
seriously thank you for taking the time to help
ok so i used ConvertXtoDvD to burn
that same W movie.
and nothing changed..
When i played the file using GOMplayer it worked perfect.
when i used WMP it had no audio.
so i thought i was good to go.
then i burned it.
took the disc out and put it into my lower Samsung disc drive to play
first i tested it on WMP..
it had no voume on the disc..
so i thought i was still fucked.
Next i tested the disc with Nero.
It had half the volume.
Some parts of the audio would cut out.
next i tested the disc with GOMplayer.
GOM told me it couldnt play the disc cuz i was missing a codec.
So i was pissed..
but then GOM told me wht Codec i was missing
AC3filter 1.46
And now the burned disc will play on all formats.
Now that i have ac3filter 1.46 installed
should i reburn the disc so it will play volume on my standalone with my TV?
What is the best thing to do here?

Depending on how ConvertX "handles" AC3 you may also want to check the audio setup on your DVD player itself - or test it on another DVD player.
Do you get NO audio or very low audio on the DVD player?
Ritek dye i find the best and works on every player i have ever watched a film on, also there is another that is slightly more expensive but there discs are also top notch, if i remember the name will edit the post
Verbatim was the top brand
As for ConvertXtoDvD i have converted the following to a dvd r structure
Highlander season 1 to 6 3 eps per dvd so 8 dvdr's per season
Highlander raven season 1 again same as highlander the season
Valkyrie
Bolt
And pretty much every top release up to and including region 5 films when they go retail i grab the full dvd r but otherwise xvid to dvdr all the way
All work and sound isn't an issue, also i have Valkyrie on my media center that's hooked up with my tv (hmdi) with cccp codec and plays without 1 issue with sound or video
Uninstall nero and just use it for burning only, i use win media 11 to play em and the cccp codec works perfect with that
U should test on the pc as a dvd film and then use the dvd player i have 5 in mine and all got there little issues but none have any kind of audio problem
