Martyrs (Fra, 08)

I have no idea how good this movie is. All I know is that friends of mine have been checking all over for a release waiting to have a look at this.

Directed by Pascal Laugier (Brotherhood of the Wolf) and starring Mylène Jampanoï - one the most beautiful women on screen in the past few years, particularly in Pan Nalin's 'Valley of Flowers' and also in 'The Chinese Botanist's Daughters' - this movie promises to make 'Inside' and 'Haute Tension' look like a Disney/Pixar family fantasy.

Literally just about to put it on, but thought I'd share the good news first.

Brutal and graphic. Not graphic in a Hostel/Saw way where the visual impact is the entire motivation for the scene; this is the other kind of brutal, where the act itself is the stomach-churner...where even if the graphics weren't in front of your eyes you'd find the scenario in which they were taking place a challenge to your mores and morals. (Don't worry though, Martyrs gives you the double-whammy: the scenario and the visuals.)

It really isn't as graphic as Hostel or Saw though: no endless scenes of flesh being pared from human bone...umm...well...not all the way through anyway

The reasoning and motivation when it appears is somewhat - IMO - contrived, but the movie believes in itself, in its own storyline, and once that has been defined it picks up speed towards an inevitable but still unexpected end.

It's an experience. Rarely enjoyable, somewhat unsettling. Definitely not a date movie...unless you're planning to dig a hole 6foot by 3foot in your back garden the next morning that is...

Difficult to give this movie a rating. I didn't really enjoy it. But I don't think anyone is supposed to 'enjoy' it. I think you just experience it...and on that scale, the same scale I'd rate rollercoasters on (and I don't enjoy rollercoasters either - if I wanted to be sick I'd jam a couple of fingers down my own throat and save £15 -)...

8.5/10 (for the experience)

It was Brutal, very sadistic, shocking and confusing. Me likey.
