Switch question/problem

Linksys switch (ezxs55w) worked @ 100Mb/s fine with his old setup. Add one more computer with an intel NIC (gigabit) and everything works @ 100Mb/s except the new box/NIC which is stuck @ 10Mb/s. All new cables cut, I unplugged all his other boxes. Its just the switch and the new box. Tried forcing it to 100, didnt work. Remove switch and run from NIC to router and it sails away @ 100MB/s.

New switch or bad card? Im assuming the switch is the problem as its quite old.

On the basis it worked when linked directly to the router, I'd say get a new switch. It's not like they're expensive, unless you're running a full on rack.

Just found it odd that a gigabit onboard LAN works fine yet a new Intel gigabit NIC only registers are 10Mb/s. Ah well.

Indeed, it is weird - but your settings are right and I assume the drivers are in place. Certainly the switch is an easy and cheap part to switch - especially if you're using an old one now.

Just an FYI Update, anyone setting up a gigabit network with gigabit equipment (NICs and true gigabit router/switches) remember to enable jumbo frames if it isnt automatic. Forcing MTU to 9000 on all my cards did the trick and forced a 1000Mb/s connection.

If everyone else knew this but me... screw you

Most good NIC cards support jumbo frames allowing more data per frame, hence more data, to be transmitted. Some auto detecting/unmanaged switches see small frames and auto negotiate a 10/100 connection instead of a true gigabit.

Another tidbit, Jumbo and super jumbo frames should not be used on the same subnet as regular MTU (1500) NICs, ie 10/100 NICs. Creates one hell of a fuckin mess (which I just now am experiencing).
