Faster Method to merge Subs to a Xvid movie?

Have a very fast comp but everytime I try to merge an srt (Subtitle file) with an existing 700mb movie it takes frick'n almost an hour to do so! What gives? Using VirtualDub to do it.

Is there a better way to merge .srt with a xvid that doesn't take a whole bloody afternoon while maintaining the quality of the movie?

Thanks VCDQ community!

if you are hard encoding them then it will take that long.

I think

Bitter, miserable twat.

Why exactly do you need to "merge" the subs?

Avisub will merge an .avi & .srt (or vobsub .idx/.sub) into a .divx container without re-encoding.
I use it for subtitled films because srt subtitles on my standalone are unreadable (small yellow font & no outline or shadow), merging them into a .divx container makes them a lot more clearer, like you would find on a normal dvd.

Only takes a couple of minutes as it doesn't hardcode the subs, it only "adds" them to the .divx container.
If your player doesn't support the format, you can always change the file extension back to .avi afterwards (my divx/avi player plays them and it's not divx certified).
Make a backup of the subs though as they can't be recovered from the .divx container.

Could a PS3 then play subtitles with this method?

Motherfucker!

Do it the lazy man's way with AGK (Auto Gordian Knot). Adds subs quite well to both divx and xvids. Use Crtl+F8 to bring up the external sub line to add it.

Thanks everyone for the replies (although regrettably these forums don't properly notify me of replies to my email -- Bah!).

Would I not want to hard-encode subs to a movie so a player like a OPPO DV980H or Philips DVP5982/37 can play the Xvid/Divx?
My fam has 4+ different kind of Divx/Xvid players so want to ensure its compatible but frick'n hardcoding the .srt to an .avi is stupid-nuts slow even on my uber PC.

Has to be another avenue to walk..

It does, but until we upgrade to the latest version of the forum software, it's a little convoluted... Go into "User CP" (at the top) > Edit Options > Use 'Email Notification' by default? "on"

Job done

hehe.. thats the first thing I check when registering to a new forum. Regrettably, vcdquality doesn't work with email notifications until, as you said, the forums need to be updated.

Edit: Tried AviSub and it creates the "avisub.divx" file but the subs don't show in the movie or my computer divx player. Tried moving the subs around on the screen but no show.

If you're watching them on the PC, why not just let the player handle the subs instead of encoding em in? I think most players handle subs but I *know* that VLC and GOMPlayer (both free) do

Because this is not for the PC, its for various Xvid/Divx external players.

Further, it makes more sense in the long run to put the subs in the actual avi since the entire family speaks english.

Just an FYI to all: I use AVI Recomp 1.3.0 to hardcode the subs into my avi but it takes up to 1hr for a single 700mb movie.

Avisub would be perfect except it doesn't work.

Noone has a resolution on this as AVI Recomp 1.3.0 is brutally slow.

pjeer?

Buy everyone (original) xbox's for xmas and softmod them, those players sound pretty out of date and I'm not aware of any overlay capabilities of them when it comes to xvid etc. (I could be completely wrong as nobody has really cared about the philips compatibility for years now)

Well no I am not getting an Xbox360 when my OPPO 980DV cleanly destroys it OR the New Philips 5990.

So there is no way to rapidly hardcode a .srt into an .avi? I have the new AVI Recomp 1.4.4 but that still take an hour to hardcode subs into a single avi. Bahhhh!

Anyone with an alternative?
