i think this is a good place to ask this..

what i wanted to do is get my computer and 2 other computers on my lan to help render custom animated projects and convert Avis to dvds, etc..

is there a home server farm software or something? or is it even possible?

There is if you run linux, even simple tasks can be split up with dr. queue. windows? don't know. probably not. search for grid computing.
