I have the early work-print...it was very good, but I'm looking forward to checking out the reliably excellent work of TCF, and to see what additions and changes might have been made to the final cut. Is this film a masterpiece? No...but it is certainly better than 98% of the swill coming out of H-Wood, and well worth the watch (related note: WTF happened to Curtis Hanson? Did he lose his fucking mind?).
This film, is not about a pedophile. This film is about someone looking for a family life...unfortunately, they look a little too hard, go way off the deep end, and do some very strange, not altogether nice, things. If you can't, at least, sympathize a little with (not condone) the kind of motivations that lead William's character to his absurd and terrifying actions, then this film will not work for you in the least. You'll hate it.
If you can; then you may be able to appreciate William's apparent skill and talent - as he finds human being in admist the (occasionally) monsterous, and (generally, pathetically) dispacable actions of his character. That's not to say that the film doesn't have its problems.
The plodding pace of the story, presumably to draw the audience's focus to the character's internal lament, is at times interminable, playing itself out ultimately into a ham-fisted dramatic convention (the new cut however, may play a little tighter...that still remains to be seen).
Overall, however, this film is quite good, a deserves a watch and TCF's prices; REALLY...who can bitch?
