Sony firmware upgrades

Does anyone know how to get a firmware upgrade for a Sony DVD player in the UK?

A guy in work got one and it doesn't play SVCD unless he gets the firmware upgraded. Unfortunately, when I phoned an official Sony repair centre, they said Sony don't do that.

Anyone help?????
