Thumbs up Review: Almost Famous (2000)

Almost Famous (2000) Review by David Letterman.

To call this movie 'good' would be criminal. This movie surpasses the term 'good'. It's fantastic and deserved of it's armfuls of awards (including an Oscarâ„¢) and #117 placing in the imdb.com top 250 chart. So anyway, why is it good? Well let me tell you...

Set in the mid 70's, this is a story of life, of bad come good and of the struggle of finding out who you really are. William Miller (Patrick Fugit) grew up in a troubled home. His father died at a young age, his sister left home at 18 due to constant rowing with his mother (Frances McDormand) and now, wrapped in a layer of motherly cotton wool, he realises he wants to break free of the mould and persue his love of writing.

William makes friends with a writer at the local paper, once a hot-shot journo for Cream magazine. Sent out to report on a Stillwater concert, William makes friends with Penny Lane (Kate Hudson), a 'groupie', who introduces him to a whole variety of weird and wacky people.

Impressed with his ability to write, Stillwater frontman Russell Hammond (Billy Crudup) invites William to join the band on their tour of the USA. At the same time, William gets a call from Rolling Stone magazine who have seen some of his articles by chance in the local paper he reports for.

What follows is an incredible (and at times emotional) tour de force of rock and roll. Booze, girls, drugs, parties, sex; the whole kit and kaboodle rolls out before this impressionable 15 year old's eyes. But it's done in an excellent style.

This movie is sure to please fans of the 'finding yourself' genre, aswell as music fans and lovers of quality cinema. This is a movie that doesn't try too hard to acheive it's goals. It's supremely acted and the plotline doesn't faulter from opening to closing credits. With stunning camerawork (think of all the old skool 70's movies done by Led Zeppelin or the Woodstock festival cum documentary) and a fantastic soundtrack to compliment it, you'll be hooked right till the end.

Go grab a slice of this movie today. And don't stop till you've consumed every last drop that it has to offer. This movie knocked my socks off. Let it remove yours too.

Final Rating: 9.5/10 "I want my final words to be...I'm on drugs!!"

Nah, it's been out like, forever. It's just i only got round to seeing it last night lol. And everyone knows i ain't 1337, so i like to review older movies. Though it's kinda cool coz some peeps have said stuff like "hey! i didn't think that movie sounded good but i tried it and it was!". stuff like that. so if i can help at all, that's a result.

But yeah, Almost Famous was just brilliant. Another DVD to add to my shopping list to replace my SVCD copy.
