Thumbs up Review: Clockstoppers (2002)

Clockstoppers (2002) Review by Chelsea Blue

How many of you know of a kids tv show called Bernard's Watch? My estimate is not many of you. Well anyway, the similarities between this and Clockstoppers is uncanny, err both of them being about a kid with a watch that stops time. I wonder where Frakes got his idea from for this movie?

Anyway, Zac Gibbs (Jesse Bradford) is a normal kid who's dad is a science teacher but also works on projects on the side. Dr. Gibbs (Robin Thomas) is working on a top secret project, a watch that contains a molecule accelerator that can stop time. By an act of fate (and Zac's love of eBay), the watch falls in to Zac's hands.

Trying to impress a new girl at school, Zac and Francesca (Paula Garcés) have heaps of fun messing around with this new toy, but unbeknownst to them, the director of the project and his drooges wants the watch back and will do anything to get it...

Clockstoppers isn't a great film, but nor is it a bad one. The script and plot are pretty much standard fare for their target audience (although my scepticism still remains on Frakes' plot idea origins) and adults will most likely get a kick out of this too. The acting seems pretty much above par too with everyone pulling they're weight to get the movie running along nicely.

This is a very easy movie to fall in to although by the end you are left thinking maybe it was all over a little too quickly. One other minor fault i had with this movie was the incredibly cheesy ending, although on reflection i decided that although it could have been handled better, the target audience would get more out of it than i did.

Clockstoppers is worth your time (and money). Although it teeter's on the average, i could name worse movies to watch. Overall, a solid performance.

Final Rating: 6.5/10 - "Bernard's Watch on a big budget"
