Review: Tears of the Sun (2003) with Bruce Willis and Monica Belluchi
"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." - Edmund Burke is a quote which comes at the very end of the movie, and is the gist of the story, beautiful and intensely directed by the director of Training Day, Antoine Fuqua, in which I believe he outdoes the Bloody war epic, Blackhawk Down.
The film stars Bruce Willis, as Lieutenant A.K. Waters, he and his men of mercenaries have been ordered to rescue a group of villagers from a village in Nigeria, when a Civil War breaks out. When they arrive they meet up with Dr. Lena Hendricks, played by the very beautiful Monica Belluchi, yes she is coming up in the new Matrix Sequels, who is in charge of a Christian Mission in the village where Lt. Waters and his commandos have to evacuate.
When the time comes to fly out. Lieutenant Waters agrees to stay behind and lead the refugees on foot to the Cameroon border. The rebels pursue them in greater numbers in an homage to Generals Custers Battle of Big Horn. Fortunately for the refugees, Water and his men have had a change of heart after seeing the horrors of the war. They intend to get everyone out alive or die trying.
The movie delves strictly into the action thats makes war action pictures great, and if it gets a strong push, this film may make it to oscar time, next year at the same time.
Even with the shoddy ending, won't give it away, this is probably one of Bruce Willis's Best movie roles, which should put him back amongst the contenders of action king.
"Tears of the Sun" is rated R for strong war violence, some brutality, and language.
opens March 7, 2003
My Rating unfortunately because of the shoddy ending) a 9.5 out of 10.
